Help Lucky the SD Rest in Peace

UPDATE!

Lucky has been diagnosed with aggressive cancer. There's nothing we can do. They give her 3 to 6 months to live.  This campaign is now to give Lucky a proper service, afford medication to comfort her and sadly,  euthanasia if the pain takes over. We don't want her to suffer. Please help Lucky have the best 3 months and go in peace.

Hello and thank you for taking the time to read about Lucky...

Lucky is currently a working seizure alert and seizure response service animal. She cares not only for her handler, but her child as well. Lucky was a hurricane katrina rescue. She was trained to be a service dog when she was just a pup. I don't know how I'd survive without her.

After a recent diagnosis of epilepsy, along with other emotional and physical disabilities that have been placed upon me, it was recommended by my doctor to get Lucky checked out and retrained to be a public service animal, meaning she'd be able to help me regardless of where I go.

What does Lucky do?

1. Lucky can sense a seizure prior to it happening. Should I go into a seizure in public, she also is trained to prevent people from harming, stealing, or taking advantage of me while I'm blacked out.

2. Lucky is a emotional support animal. She is able to keep her human out of crippling depression.

3. Lucky is able to identify medications (via colored caps) and retrieve emergency medications when I am unable. As seen in the photo below, Lucky  brings me medication and water when she senses the need. This time, she brought me an apple as well to make me feel better :)

4. Lucky is able to alert others during an emergency. She's also trained to locate emergency personelle should I be indisposed or unable to speak.

5. She's a hero. Not only has Lucky prevented a break in, but she also is trained to kick over a landline phone and press a button to call 911 if she's unable to awake me.

6. Lucky is trained to wake me from panic attacks or warn me of seizures in my sleep, as she sleeps near my chest and listens to my heart.

7. Lucky was very protective when I was pregnant with my son. Once he was born, she quickly learned that to calm a fussy baby she would gently push his cradle. Lucky has taken her fair share of rough housing from my son growing up. She never once has bit or nipped or growled or shown her teeth. Now that I've become disabled and my son is a bit older... they're best friends!

8. Lucky is trained to alert me of smoke, fire, break ins, and unordinary circumstances.

9. Lucky is specifically trained to alert someone or get help when my legs give out due to a spinal injury or if I have fallen. At home, she'll get someone or bring me a phone or my cane on command.

10. Most importanly, Lucky gives me love and affection and she's a perfect companion and my best friend.

What's the problem?

Unfortunately, in the United States, someone can wait up to 5 years for disability help. I'm struggling to pay my bills, I don't even have a bed for myself. As a disabled single mother, times are hard when no one wants to hire someone who might have a seizure or can't walk without assistance. I can't afford... well, really anything.

Unfortunately, I had to move into a smaller home to better support my family. My landlord is fully in support of me having Lucky by my side. On top of that, my doctor suggests that I have my service animal with me at all times.

Sadly, Lucky has cancer. She developed a tumor over the past few months. It doesn't bother her and she seems not to be in pain, however we sincerely need to remove the tumor before it spreads somewhere else and god forbid takes Lucky from me.

Lucky's tumor IS operable and veterinarians are willing to work with me when it comes to billing. However, due to my situation, both vets that are willing to help and understand my situation request a downpayment of $1800 for surgery/medications used during surgery.

I will hopefully be receiving disability assistance in September when I FINALLY go to court to speak to the judge. I do have a "probono" lawyer that assures me I will receive it.  We've been waiting for my court date for three years. This will help me to provide the rest of the funds to the vet for my SA. However, for now, she severely needs surgery and there's not much I can do to come up with $1800 and then some.

Here is Lucky's tumor. It is located directly under her front leg on her chest.

Lucky is an amazing animal, friend and companion. She's an amazing inspiration to many. She was "born in the storm" during katrina. When I adopted her she was a little pudge ball. I knew she would be perfect for me. I sat in the pen and she came and fell asleep on my lap.

She's extremely even tempered and very well mannered. Her trainer said she took to commands very easily and she was "one of the best in her class." I'm very proud of her and I'd do anything I can to try and literally save her (and thus my) life.

Any help is appreciated. Even those who cannot donate, a kind supportive comment, a positive inspirational message, suggestions, donating services, advice, or somewhere I might have overlooked that is cheaper than I've found... it all helps. Most importantly please SHARE HER STORY.

A huge thanks for reading and sharing our story.

Signed with extreme amounts of love and doggie kisses,
Lucky and her humans
