TOP 5 was started out of my families back yard in 2012 when my wife (Davetta Greene) was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer. I began smoking meats in the backyard to pass time while she was going through each stage of her fight (chemo, radiation, and a double mastectomy) and boy was it nasty, so nasty my 120 pound American Bulldog would not eat it. However, it fueled my passion to become one of the best pit masters around. So we bought a small trailer, hooked it the back of our Tahoe and went out and and officially started selling bbq. Fast forward two years and we moved into a small 1286 square foot building and things took off from there! Rated #8 best barbecue by D-Magazine, Best barbecue in DFW by Dallas Observer, and TOP 50 BBQ spots in the GREAT state of Texas by Texas Monthly Magazine. We have been blessed to cater for some awesome tours such as Beyonce', Jay-Z, OTR Tour, Justin Timberlake, Selena Gomez, Fred Hammond, The Mann's, and others! We eventually moved out of that small building into a larger one across the street and that is when travesty struck. Davetta and I have been through a lot in our 13 years of marriage our middle son born with sickle cell, youngest born with down syndrome and congestive heart failure, but there was nothing that prepared us for what we were getting ready to face. The night of our move on July 28th our last day in our old building my father had a massive stroke, less than three weeks later my wife lost her father, and on top of dealing with our daily family lives and struggles it took us a lot longer to open than expected. Our expected date was August 5th to open our new location, but due to these unforeseen tragedies we were not able to open until October 5th. Those three months being closed hurt us tremendously, the bills kept rolling in, the debt did not stop, the building that we were in was not up to par, and by the time we finally started seeing the light it was to late. Unfortunately, on March 5th we had to close our doors and see our dream fade away, until... When people found out what happened there was an outpouring of love and a very large interest in how they could help. I'm a bit private and prideful and don't like asking for help until I was told by one of the young men that I mentored said, "KG you have blessed so many people and it maybe your turn to be blessed", I'm not sure but that is what I am asking for. I want to get back out there and start back smoking some of Texas best and blessing people with jobs and also people's taste buds. We want to start back off like we did and that in a food trailer delivering everywhere we can and work our way back up to a small restaurant. With your help we can do just that. Anything that can be given to #SaveTop5 will be a blessing to us and we promise you will not be let down... We will continue in our tradition of being "Just Smokin' Good". Until, then have a "Smokin Good Day"!
