Sgro Family Car Accident
Donation protected
Rick Sgro, Allie Sgro, Abby Sgro and Daniel Merritt were involved in a head on collision coming home from a family outing to a White Sox game on Friday.
Abby and Daniel were very bruised and banged up. Abby also received a concussion from the crash. Both were discharged yesterday and are at home recovering before heading back to Southern IL where they are stationed in the Air Force.
Uncle Rick sustained minor lacerations in addition to a broken left wrist and a shattered femur in his right leg. The belief is after surgery he will still have loss of mobility in that wrist. Surgery for the shattered femur is today and they won’t know about recovery time until the surgeons are in and see the damage, which is thought to be considerable.
Allie, by far, received the most trauma. She had emergency surgery yesterday to repair her torn diaphragm and move her intestines and bowel from her chest cavity. The true extent of the bowel damage won’t be known for a few days and the hope is she won’t need additional surgery. Also, Allie has a broken back. Her L1 and L2 are broke and she was 1/2 inch from the injury causing paralysis. At this time they are not able to treat her broken back until her other injuries have been treated and had more time to heal. Minimum she will need to wear a back brace for 12 weeks once she can be fitted for it, which won’t be until her internal trauma is healed. The doctors are not able to give a recovery time due to the extent of her injuries.
Allie and Rick have a long recovery road ahead of them. The family greatly appreciates any donations to help lessen the financial burden they all will be facing. Prayers and positive thoughts are also needed as they heal and find their new normal.
