24 Hours of Silence for LGBTQ
Donation protected
My name is Bethany. I'm a blogger, intersectional feminist, and 15-year-old high school student. I was inspired by the Free The Children club at my school to dedicate a day of silence to a cause that I am passionate about on 4/17, and I chose to support the LGBTQ community.
LGBTQ youth are four times as likely to commit suicide as straight youth. 50% of transgender youth attempt suicide before they turn twenty. Just recently, Leelah Alcorn, a transgender teenager, and Zander Mahaffey both committed suicide because their parents refused to recognize the gender they identified as. I will be silent for people like them, whose voices weren't heard by even the people they were closest with.
While my day of silence has symbolic meaning, I'm hoping to increase its meaning by also raising money for the cause even after my day of silence. My goal is to raise $240 dollars for the San Diego LGBT pride parade, an annual celebration that empowers a group of oppressed people. This is a small amount, but only because I want to start small since this is my very first GoFundMe fundraiser. Once the amount is raised, I will be doing yet another day of silence in honor the San Diego LGBT pride parade.
I'm hoping to dedicate one day of silence to a different cause each week, and this is just the beginning.
For more information, updates will be posted on my Instagram page.
