My name is Sky. I'm a 20-year-old non binary person living in Perth, Australia. I am seeking treatment from Dr Timothy Hewitt to get peri areola gynaecomastia surgery (also known as male breast reduction surgery).
I found out I was transgender in 2015. Since then I knew I wanted treatment to help me look more androgynous. I changed my legal name and went on hormone therapy (testosterone) in early January of 2018. I've been binding my chest nearly every day since I was 15 to make it appear flat, which can be very risky. Binding your chest, even safely, can lead to rib bruising, spraining, fractures and breakage. It is also very uncomfortable to wear for long periods of time.
I am seeking top surgery because I want to be able to look in the mirror and see myself. I don't want to constantly worry about if my chest 'looks flat enough', or worry about how sweaty it gets in the Australian summer heat with a binder. I just want to be myself. Because of my chest size, I've trained myself to hunch over to hide the appearance of it, so I have a really poor posture. I'd love to one day walk outside standing proud and upright, ready to take on the world.
I became homeless in October of 2017 because I had to run away from an unsupportive family, and since then I've been receiving Centrelink payments and living in crisis accommodation housing around the Perth region. I've been looking for a job ever since I became homeless, and so far I've able to obtain a casual job as a Homeless Youth Advisory Council member at YACWA, which allows me to not only get extra money, but allows me to actively fight homelessness. I am planning to obtain more hours to aid myself financially. My ultimate goal is to get top surgery in 2021.
The total for my goal number ($10,000) includes the surgery itself, the hospital stay, and the anaesthetist. The specifics are in my updates. I had a consultation with Dr Hewitt 25 September 2018 where he gave me all these figures. I'm planning on booking the actual surgery as soon as I'm able to reach my goal.
