From Burn Survivor to Entrepreneur

Hello!

My name is Shelby Anderson. I am 20 years old, a redhead, and a burn survivor.

I had a very severe accident in the summer of 2013. I was helping my family make a large dinner and I was squeezing limes for the meal. Little did we know that lime juice, combined with sunlight can cause severe acid burns. I spent three days in the UCI Burn Ward and two weeks incapacitated in splints at home afterward. As a result of this accident, I cannot be out in the sun for very long as I burn extremely easily. With the sensitivity to my hands, and the now very real risk of skin cancer, I realized that I should be treating my whole body just as carefully. Everyday I make to stay covered up because I already have had surgeries to remove spots of potential skin cancer off my body. It also has made me realize I am not alone, there are millions of people who struggle with sun sensitivity and skin cancer risks. This awareness has created a “burning” passion in me to be an advocate and educate the public about these issues.

Why does this matter? Skin cancer is a growing concern in the United States, “One in five Americans will develop skin cancer in the course of a lifetime” (SkinCancer.org) so we need to be taking preventative measures early on. Other people suffer from sun sensitivity, one example is autoimmune diseases such as lupus where women are 78% of those who are suffering from the desease. (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/) Other factors that contribute to sun sensitivity is medications, genetics, and certain cosmetics.

I am going to college to become an advocate for girls like me who have gone through trumatic experiences and by helping them find the resources they need to get through life. While in college I started my own fashionable UV protective clothing, cosmetics, and accessories line called Sol Sisters that helps sun sensitive women find attractive options for protecting themselves from the sun. How can you help?

Currently I am trying to raise money for college! Donating to this campaign helps me pay for my tuition and books!

If you are reading this for the #GFMScholarship I am a Junior at UC Irvine studying Social Policy and Public Service. I have a 3.7 major GPA as well as on the Deans Honor List. It  would be amazing for me to win this scholarship because it would take a huge weight off me and my family's shoulders. Money has been tight since my accident and this scholarship could really help.

I have worked hard to succeed after my accident and turn it into something that can have a positive affect on many people, and winning this scholarship would only help me do that more. So please share and help me achieve my dreams!
