Sparks May Fly (2023)

Sparks May Fly is an original short film about relationships, identity, addiction, faith, and the power of decisions.

As an independent team of young filmmakers, we want to bring this story to life in a way that is authentic, compelling, and ultimately delivers a high-quality finished product - and we would love your help!

Please see below for all the details on who we are, our plans for this production, and why your contribution makes a real difference!

★ OUR TEAM:

HUNTER BOYDELL - Director & Producer / 'Horace'
Hunter is leading the team that will bring Sparks May Fly to life, drawing on everything he has learned over several years of ambitious short film productions. The original script and soundtrack have been newly written by Hunter, offering viewers an engaging, personal story that navigates real-life issues with honesty, vulnerability, and hope. On the other side of the camera, he will be playing 'Horace'.

KAT CANOY - Assistant Producer
Fresh from the successful production of another recent short film, Kat is taking charge of essential behind-the-scenes processes for Sparks May Fly, from planning and scheduling, to communications and outreach, as well as helping to ensure a safe and positive environment for our cast and crew.

CELIA BIRCHALL - Costume Designer
Celia's own ethos and vision in fashion design make her a perfect collaborator for the costumes of Sparks May Fly. She is working closely with Hunter to develop a unique visual world, creating custom pieces to reflect the traits of each character, as well as their deeper backstory and culture.

GABBY DAMANSKYTE - Cinematographer
Behind the camera for Sparks May Fly, Gabby brings great sensitivity, creativity, and skill to the role of Cinematographer. She will be capturing each frame of our story as we follow the characters through a series of pivotal moments, tracing the connections and contrasts between them.

GIULIA DI BELLA - 'Grace'
Giulia is a final year Drama student with a seasoned approach to acting across both theatre and film. With her own journey as a third culture kid closely reflecting the film's theme of identity, Giulia is uniquely placed to navigate the role of 'Grace' in our story with authenticity and depth.

MARGOT ANTIGNAC - 'Jessica'
An accomplished young artist with a passion for acting, Margot joins our team as a perfect fit for the role of 'Jessica'. She has a deep understanding of the character and of the story as a whole, which will be invaluable in crafting a sincere and natural performance.

MADELINE SILTON - Assistant Director (London)
Madeline brings her wealth of experience as a writer and director to the Sparks May Fly production. Supporting the team during our London shoots, Madeline will help to manage the filming process in each scene, ensuring all shots are covered and keeping us on track.

MATTHEW CLEGG - Assistant Director (St Andrews)
Matt is a first year Film student at St Andrews, with a history of creative ventures already under his belt. As an Assistant Director, Matt will support the core team for our coastal shoots, as we capture several key scenes on location in Fife.

TANCREDI FOSCHINI - Production Assistant
With a background in film and video production in Italy, Tanc brings his passion and experience to this new project on the producing side. He will play a crucial part in keeping things running smoothly during our busy shooting schedule.

★ PLUS...
With the last few team members now being recruited, our full cast and crew will be made up entirely of young filmmakers, students, recent graduates, and people at the start of a creative career. In bringing together young talent from around the UK, this project provides a fantastic opportunity for each person to gain experience and pursue their craft in a professional context, while helping to create a meaningful film that will be shared with viewers worldwide.

★ THE PLAN:
We are already hard at work in pre-production for this film, and can't wait to crack on with the production process over the next few months! Your contribution to this crowdfunding campaign is greatly appreciated, as all the funds raised will go directly towards making Sparks May Fly the best short film it can be.

In managing our budget, we plan to specifically prioritise the following:
  • Locations - We will be filming both in London and around St Andrews/Fife, travelling through a range of locations to capture a dynamic contrast between the city and the wilderness.
  • Props & Set - Selecting the appropriate props and set-dressings will help us achieve a sense of realism and believability as we curate a fictional world on-screen.
  • Costumes - Our designer Celia is working on unique costume pieces especially for this film. Sourcing the right materials will greatly enhance her efforts and help us deliver a coherent aesthetic and visual style.
  • Equipment - We will be making use of our own or borrowed equipment wherever possible; however, maintenance and supplies are likely to be needed.
  • Support - As we prepare for filming with our full cast and crew, we are committed to looking after everyone on set and ensuring proper care is taken. Whilst all roles on this project are unpaid, we hope to be able to at least cover some basic expenses in addition to the essential production costs.

★ WHY £1,000?
We know it's a time of financial uncertainty for most right now, and that this may well be a barrier for people who would otherwise be keen to contribute. We also believe in the power of this story, and the positive impact we know it can make. So we’ve decided to set a funding goal much lower than what an equivalent campaign would usually seek to raise, and focus on making the most of what we have!

The style we're going for in this film lends itself very well to a low-budget production, as we embrace a natural, character-driven feel, shot with a small cast and crew, in real-world locations. Our team has experience working with tiny budgets to achieve fantastic results, so we can guarantee we'll squeeze the maximum value from every penny we raise!

If we can reach our crowdfunding target of £1,000, we will be able to fulfill our goal of bringing Sparks May Fly to life as a unique and compelling short film. At this exciting stage in the journey, we would love to have you on board with us! Your financial contribution truly goes a long way in making this production possible, as we create a story that can change people's lives for the better.

THANK YOU, and we can't wait to show you the finished film -
From the Sparks May Fly team!
