Alternative (Autism) Baseball
Donation protected
Hi! I'm Taylor. I'm 20 years old and have autism. As a child, I played on a special needs baseball team and then a Little League team. When I reached the age of 13, my coach encouraged me to quit. Even though he said he was concerned about me being hurt, I knew that it mostly came from his perception of my ability and his desire to have a competitive team.
Several years later, I joined a slow pitch softball team as part of a church league. Even though, there were many barriers I had to work through, I eventually realized I would need to coach my own team to have the chance to increase my skills and to have success on the field. I became a coach for the first time at the age of 17. That year, my team played in the league's championship game.
I just wanted the chance to play ball... a chance to improve my skills, to form social relationships in which I would be accepted for who I am, and to enjoy the sport. I met some wonderful players who have since become role models and mentors for me. I have grown as a person and my love for the sport has grown as well. For this reason, I want to provide the same opportunities for other individuals who have special needs.. individuals who just want a chance to experience sports just like their "typical" peers. With hard work and determination, success can be found, if only given a chance.
The Alternative Baseball Organization is a
developmental baseball/softball organization based out of Atlanta, Georgia that is targeted towards teens & adults with autism, Asperger's, Down Syndrome, LD, and other special needs. Players participate in practices, drills (hitting, fielding, baserunning), and games (officiated by a real umpire organization!)! Everyone also gets the chance to form social friendships with their teammates, improving their social skills. This program has been established to raise awareness for special needs and to give the participants the opportunities to take on new challenges and break barriers!
My desire is to expand our program and to inspire communities all over the world to believe in those who have "disadvantages" and to give them a chance to be the best they can be. WE NEED YOUR HELP! We need funds to establish our non-profit status and to purchase equipment. Any help is appreciated!!! THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR SUPPORT!!!!
