The Spirit of Tatá is a feature-length documentary about 103-year-old Tatá Yawanawá, one of the oldest shamans in the Amazon Rainforest. The film follows Tatá’s final days, a historic and challenging time for the tribe as they confront the imminent loss of their beloved elder and one of the greatest living libraries of spiritual knowledge in the Amazon.
Tatá safeguarded the sacred traditions through the difficult years of colonization, rubber tappers and missionaries. Faced with near extinction in the mid-1980s, the Yawanawá expelled the missionaries, with Tatá leading the way to restoring and reviving Yawanawá culture.
The Yawanawá—and Tatá’s—story reflects what’s happening among indigenous peoples around the world: ancient cultures losing their elders and struggling to revive languages and traditions before they are lost forever. The film aims to wake up modern audiences to the vital need to preserve and support indigenous cultures—and their vast stores of knowledge—for the sake of all life on earth.
We are grateful to Tashka Yawanawá, Chief of the Yawanawá, and Matsini Yawanawá, Spiritual Leader of the tribe, for their invitations to document Tatá’s last days and for their ongoing collaboration and support for the project. (Meet the filmmakers here .)
To finance this film, we have already benefited from the generous support of our creative team and inner circle of friends and family, as well as a surprising number of donations from people around the world who found their way to The SOFIE Foundation website . Thank you! This support has allowed us to travel to Tatá’s village of Mutum where we were able to film with the tribe for over 12 weeks.
We are now in the post-production stage and are seeking funds for editing, color-correction, music, sound mixing, and translating the native language—and to create animated sequences that bring to life Tatá’s stories and the history and mythology of the Yawanawá.
Once completed we will submit the film to festivals and hold special screenings within various indigenous communities in the Amazon and around the world.
All of this will be possible only with your support.
All profits from the film will go directly to the tribe, to be reinvested in ongoing projects that benefit the Yawanawá villages and people.

O Espírito de Tatá é um documentário sobre Tatá Yawanawá, um dos pajés mais velhos que já habitaram a Floresta Amazônica. O filme acompanha os últimos dias de vida do Tatá, um momento histórico e difícil para toda a tribo, enfrenta a iminente perda de seu ancião mais querido e um dos maiores conhecedores da esfera espiritual e medicinal Amazônica.
Durante os anos mais difíceis, em que os colonizadores, seringueiros e missionários censuravam as práticas ancestrais indígenas, Tatá foi o grande guardião da cultura e espiritualidade Yawanawá. Depois de quase serem extintos nos anos 80, os Yawanawá expulsaram os missionários de suas terras e foi Tatá que liderou o movimento para restituir a cultura Yawanawá.
A história dos Yawanawá – e de Tatá – reflete o que está ocorrendo com os povos indígenas em todo o planeta: culturas ancestrais perdendo seus anciãos e sofrendo para manter suas línguas e tradições antes que tudo esteja perdido para sempre. Estamos agora na etapa de pós-produção e buscamos fundos para edição, correção de cor, música, mixagem de som, e tradução da língua nativa – além da criação de sequências de animação que darão vida às histórias de Tatá e à mitologia dos Yawanawá.
Uma vez completo, iremos submeter o filme à festivais, além de organizar projeções em uma série de comunidades indígenas na Amazônia e ao redor do mundo.
