Route 66 Glass

Hello! Thank you for taking the time to explore Route 66 Glass!

The creative community here in Amarillo is booming.  Numerous galleries and studios are opening with great success. The Sunset Center has become almost exclusively art studios and galleries comprised of over 55 artists and entrepreneurs.  Excellent galleries and creative projects such as Process Art House are setting a new precedent for the City of Amarillo. We will be doing our part to contribute to this vibrant and evolving creative environment.

Glass is a fantastic medium for art that requires absolute focus. It teaches teamwork, communication, and other skills applicable to the world outside of art. A studio on 6th street within walking distance from both San Jacinto High School and the YMCA offers amazing opportunities for youth engagement and learning. An open access facility in the heart of Amarillo creates avenues for community development with local artists, students, church groups, corporations, and, most importantly, the people who call this place home! It is time to bring Glass Blowing to Route 66, and we would like to invite you to join us in this exciting adventure!

We already have a great deal of material resources pledged to the cause including both high temperature fire brick and steel to aid in the construction of our furnaces, annealing kilns, working benches, and tools. Further, the glass shop and gallery will be an impressive addition to the fully functioning Raburn Studio and Cimarron Printmakers located at 3301 SW 6th Ave – a 9,000 square foot space that includes print mediums such as Stone Lithography, Offset Lithography, Serigraphy, Intaglio, Screen Printing, as well as an impressive Letterpress set up.

Michael Raburn is the owner, operator, and Master printer for Raburn Studios and Cimarron Printmakers. In 1979 he began his professional career cofounding Telos Graphics workshop. Later, in 1990 Mr. Raburn formed Cimarron Studio which has become Cimarron Printmakers, a commercial print operation catering to artists such as Ed Ruscha, Bill Schenk, and Ed Mell. In 1991 he worked with Collectors Editions to help form Disney Fine Art. Michael moved to Amarillo, TX with his family in 2011 to become the director and Master printer for West Texas A&M University’s Vermillion Editions. Since relocating to Amarillo, Michael has ingrained himself in the community offering his studio and experience to various artists, as well as creating events such as the Last Friday print workshop and various other youth print workshops.

Josh Davids is a glass artist out of Denver as well as a recent graduate of the Glass and Sculpture program at West Texas A&M University. There, the artist gained a wealth of experience teaching classes from youth to college levels, repairing and maintaining a broad range of studio equipment as well as leading production, and developing professional art works and exhibitions. Most recently he was employed as a production assistant at Blake Street Glass in Denver, Co, but has also worked with various artists from across the United States and traveled extensively throughout Europe exploring the glass and art communities of the world. Working alongside other graduates, current students, and local artists, the goal is to create an efficient studio that is capable of running events and classes for the community, sustaining a viable professional outlet for local artists as well as those from abroad, and providing Amarillo with quality hand blown glass art.

Together, with our resources, networks, and your support, we can fulfill this mission! In turn we will support and invigorate Amarillo’s burgeoning creative community. Help us bring glass to the history of Amarillo and Route 66!
