Compost and Castings

Food waste is not something that most of us give a second thought, but 40%  of our waste is food.

If that doesn’t sound like it would be a big deal, well it is. When food is put into a land fill it releases methane, one of the leading greenhouse gasses.

What I am asking for help with is raising the funds to be able to get  commercial operations off the ground by taking in the food waste from my local community and turning it into viable compost that will, in turn, go back into the ground to grow food. Once I am able to successfully close the loop on food entering a landfill I can do my part to lower greenhouse gas emissions.

To make a stronger product, and get the most out of the compost, I intend to use worms. Worm composting can raise the value of the compost. That will surely show in the yeild of your gardens. This process is also known as vermicomposting or vermiculture.

Vermiculture is not a word that many folks are familiar with, but I believe they soon will be. Also know as worm farming or worm composting, vermiculture is a few step above your average composting due to the usage of worms.

Worms are able to break down organic matter much faster than traditional composting alone, and the byproduct is more nutrient dense than regular composting methods.

All I am asking for is help funding this vision. I would like to  start a large enough worm farm on my property to compost food scraps and yard waste for an entire city and, hopefully, a whole county so it stays out of a land fill. In addition, I would like to give back to the community with a product that is proven to improve the growth of plants. That will, in turn, produce organic waste that eventually feeds the worms to create a sustainable cycle.

Year round feeding and breeding of worms will only foster the growth of this business and I strongly believe vermiculture will be the future of composting organic waste. Instead of being picked up on trash day, organic waste will have its own pick up day and be delivered to worm farms throughout the country. The end product will be worm castings, avalible to spread on everything from gardens to golf courses.

I would love to help provide education to local schools on vermiculure and the benefits of organic waste management. I will offer these services to students and schools  providing free worm castings to those who wish to start their own school gardens.

A lot of research is being put into this venture to ensure I can immediate begin the composting process for a fast turn around, and put out a quality product for use in your garden. Year round production is the goal, and growth is inevitable, so please consider donating to  this cause.
