WSU Nepal Earthquake Relief Fund

Dear all,

A devastating tragedy has struck the Himalayan nation of Nepal on April 25th, 2015. Two days after the massive earthquake the death toll has risen above 4,000 and over 10,000 severely injured. You have probably seen some of the horrifying images of the havoc and destruction left behind by the earthquake. Saturday's magnitude 7.8 earthquake spread horror from the capital city of Kathmandu to small villages and to the slopes of Mount Everest. Nearly 100 aftershocks have been felt after the earthquake and the whole nation is camping out in the open with barely any food, water and shelter to survive. Hospitals in Kathmandu are overcrowded and running out of emergency supplies. As a close-knit Nepalese community here at Wright State University, we feel an urge and necessity to try and help in any way we can to ensure a relief effort is set up for the affected people of earthquake.

The purpose for this communication is to initiate a relief fundraising for the people of Nepal.  We, as a community of Nepalese in WSU and Dayton, are therefore asking anyone who feels they want to help to join us, please, by making a direct donation to International Medical Corps (IMC), or at booths set up by the University Center for International Education (UCIE) and International Cultural Exchange. IMC is the charity of our choice because they are on grounds responding to the people directly affected by the earthquake and Facebook will match any amount donated to IMC.

Fundraising booths will be on April 29th -30th in the Student Union Atrium from 11am-1pm.  Popcorn will be sold for $1 in the UCIE and direct donations can also be made in the UCIE office, E190 Student Union.

On May 1st from 1-2:30pm our Nepalese students, Inter Cultural Exchange, and UCIE will sponsor a Fundraiser for Nepal in the Student Union Atrium.  Nepalese students will share an update on their country and impact on their families.  There will also be traditional artifacts, music, and performances to support the fundraising efforts.  Donations can be made at the event or by visiting the UCIE website at www.wright.edu/ucie.

Several charitable activities at various Universities throughout the US have been initiated by both Nepalese students and/ or US nationals. But, a disaster like this requires a lot of funding and resources, and we, the Nepalese students and community, sincerely ask each of you at Wright State University and the Dayton area to donate any amount of money you can. Even a dollar can make a huge difference because it is equivalent to 100 NRS and $1 can buy 4 bottles of clean water in Nepal.

Please, feel free to circulate this letter as you see fit and pick any of the following charities listed below.

 Sincerely,

Nepalese students, alumni and community in Dayton
