Music Therapy Cart for Kids In Need
Tax deductible
Children’s Music Fund (CMF) is a charity that helps children heal through music. We provide music therapy programs to kids affected by serious conditions or life-altering illnesses, in order to help them on their journey towards a better quality of life.
To celebrate our 15 Years of Service, we are raising money to build a music therapy cart, complete with a mobile recording-studio and state-of-the-art research equipment! You can contribute to our cause by donating to bring music into community hospitals in underserved areas of Southern California.
This music therapy cart will allow our music therapists to more efficiently perform their sessions around the hospital while collecting vital research data, and also give their child patients a tangible memory in their recorded-CD to take home and cherish for the rest of their lifetimes.
One (1) music therapy cart costs $3000 and contains:
Laptop - $300
Wooden Cart - $60
Headphones (2) - $30
Plugable Guitar - $225
Plugable Keyboard - $300
Lab in a Box Research Equipment - $1,900.00
80 Rewritable CD's - $10
Blue Snowball Microphone - $50
Electronic Drumbeat Pad - $125
The Lab in a Box Research Kit was designed by Dr. Alexander Khalil, Project Scientist at UCSD’s Institute of Neural Computation, and Dr. TzyyPing Jung, Co-Director of UCSD’s Center of Neurological Engineering. It provides a minimalist, yet highly advanced way to obtain a wide variety of physiological symptoms.
At CMF, our goal is to not only provide healing through music, but also obtain data that will allow us to draw quantitative conclusions on the benefits of music therapy. The Lab in a Box features three components: a specialized cell phone, high resolution camera, and wrist band. This cell phone, which is placed in the patient’s pocket during a session and under their pillow afterwards, uses an accelerometer to track excess movement caused by anxiety and fear. The high resolution camera tracks changes in body temperature, movement, and pupil dilation. Last, the wristband provides a constant monitoring of skin conductance and heart rate through pulsations of the skin. While none of these components can individually provide conclusive evidence that physiological symptoms are lessened, together, the trio allows for a noninvasive, yet accurate and efficient way to transmit data real time to the Neural Computation labs at UCSD. This groundbreaking research may one day serve as the standard to which all future music therapy research is measured.
Give the gift of music this holiday season by helping us fund music therapy carts for kids in need!
About Children's Music Fund:
CMF connects eligible patients to board-certified music therapists who provide a personalized treatment plan at home and in-hospitals, gifts musical instruments to our patients so that they continue their healing process throughout their lifetimes, and supports/conducts research on music therapy to further innovate the field and work to integrate music with medicine. While doctors use medications to treat symptoms, music can provide additional healing, both for the body and the soul. Engaging children in music-making and listening helps reduce pain and anxiety, and provides a much needed distraction from their conditions.
