THE LONGEST SWIM across the Pacific
Donation protected
Embark with us! My team and I are preparing for The Longest Swim , a citizen science expedition across the Pacific. Now you may have some questions…
What is The Longest Swim?
In short, it will be the first attempt to swim across the Pacific Ocean; but there is much more to it than that. Our larger aim is to conduct research and raise awareness of the state of our ocean
Wait… what?
I will swim from Tokyo to San Francisco, an average of 8 hours a day. With the help of the currents, it should take me 6 to 8 months to cross the 5,000 miles.
How? When will you sleep and eat?
I will be escorted by a support vessel Discoverer and 8 other adventurers. They will mark my GPS location when I break for the day to eat and sleep in the boat. The crew will then bring me to that exact same spot to dive back in the next morning.
But…why swim?
I have always swum for a reason, it’s my way of expression. In 1998 I became the first man to swim across the Atlantic Ocean without a kickboard, as a tribute to my father and to support cancer research. This time I will jump in the water in the name of science and protecting our oceans.
How can you swim AND help protect the ocean at the same time?
More than just a swim, The Longest Swim will be the first citizen science expedition of its kind: my crew and I will collect valuable data on the ocean, including plastic pollution, for 14 research projects directed by 27 scientific institutions. Our team on land will also work with several organizations including Algalita and The Ocean Institute to highlight initiatives around the world and invite you to take action.
When does it start?
My crew is currently sailing Discoverer to Japan to get ready for the departure. If the weather conditions are good, we expect to start the swim late May from Japan.
How can I help?
By donating on this page, and sharing the story with your friends! Everyone in our team is volunteering, your support will allow us to buy food and pay our satellite connection along the way.
How can I follow you?
This expedition is a story we want to share with you! You can already follow our progress on social media, and through our website with a logbook and a live tracker. At sea, we will be sharing regular content from the middle of the ocean via satellite. With your help, we will open up a window to the ocean, explore this mysterious world together, and learn how to better protect it.
… and what about the sharks?
I will wear a magnetic bracelet to repel sharks without harming them, you can check my full kit and learn more about the project on our website.
