We all need family. Even lions have a pride to call home. Families provide comfort, protection, nourishment, love. Yet, 40% of homeless youth in America are LGBTQ, and the majority of them were kicked out or ran away. It's easy in this narrative to vilify the family and leave it at that. But those parents likely wonder where their child is, if they're okay, if they're safe, if they're loved.
The Pride Alliance seeks to reunify families. With an education forward approach, we don't ask families to just change their mind all of a sudden. We provide the information and tools necessary to learn about the LGBTQ community, to reconnect in a safe way with their child, and to move beyond the hurt of the past and into the potential of the future.
The Pride Alliance seeks a Pride Restored. All of these services will be provided free of charge, but only if we can pay to get started.
This money will be used to establish The Pride Alliance as a 501(c)(3). It costs over $1,500 to file the paperwork, get tax exempt status, pay for the website, various administrative costs, and the hosting and the business cards and so on. We must reach or exceed this funding goal by November 28th, 2017, also known as #givingtuesday.
No family should sit in limbo, unsure if their child is safe, and no child should sleep on the street, wondering if their family still thinks about them. Reunification is possible, is necessary, and shouldn't be hindered by a few filing fees.
Materials and resources are being provided by The Proud Path, an educational module series with worksheets and video content. Education on something as simple, yet evasive, as what does LGBTQIA stand for to addressing microaggressions and social constructs of gender. The modules are taken at the parent's pace, and are built to support knowledge dispelling the fear that comes with the unknown.
