The Red Chair Project

Social equality doesn't exist.
The majority of our citizens do not have the same level of civil rights, freedom of speech, property rights and equal access to social goods and services.

Our society values what you have, more than who you are. Wealth and status mean more than your thoughts and actions.

People choose clothing like a mask they wear to portray a role to the rest of the world. Beneath this façade, no matter what our social status, we are very similar, with the same wants, needs, doubts, and desires.

My Red Chair Project is about casting away the stereotypes of the material world and showing people for who they really are.

The Red Chair Project consists of nude portraits where the common ground that binds the images together is just the chair. Inspired by such beautiful works by Cézanne and Picasso, the Red Chair is the formal, yet unassuming motif that makes no judgment about the subject who sits upon it.

Commoner or King are all equal in the Red Chair.

Subjects are asked to fill out a brief questionnaire about their thoughts and then just sit and talk with me during the photo shoot. No one is posed, everyone can sit however they are comfortable and feel free to be themselves.

The goal is 100 portraits and I am already more than halfway there. I am looking for women, men and couples from all walks of life and ethnicity to help me complete this project.

Once I have reached my goal there will be a gallery installation of all 100 portraits.

Putting together an installation of this magnitude takes funding. The funding is needed for advertising to attract more subjects, the cost of producing the images and the cost of designing and printing the catalog that will accompany the exhibition. Eventual advertisement and publicity of the actual installation will also be needed.
I need to have the funding in place by July 1 so that I can advertise for my culturally deverse participants and make my target dates.

The goal is to complete shooting these portraits by October of this year and then start working on editing the images and prepare for the installation as early as Spring 2019, once a gallery has been signed.

By putting together this installation, the hope is that this mass of images, all together in one space, will make the viewer think about racial and social divisions and possibly help eliminate these boundaries and change the way people see race and status in this country and beyond.

I hope you will think about participating in my project either as a participant or in funding.  If you do you will have the satisfaction of knowing that you are helping tear down the walls of stereotype and show that we are all the same, we are all members of one race, the human race.
