The Sock Hop - Vintage Arts Venue Blue Mountains

SCROLL DOWN TO SEE REWARDS <3

2013 Miss Pinup International and local dancer, choreographer and producer Porcelain is seeking your help to make the dream of "The Sock Hop" a reality for local and touring performance artists and local performing arts students!

A permanent home for The Vintage Vixens,  Wild Warrior Women Festival, Stone Cold Fox Burlesque Collective, Burlesk of the Bizarre, Sock Hop Studios For Kids and available to other local and visiting artists for rehearsals and performances, the Sock Hop is a vintage styled venue for performers and patrons to enjoy in the beautiful "City of The Arts".

A fully qualified and experienced dance teacher and social welfare worker who has taught dance for over 15 years and run studio spaces before Porcelain is aware how hard it can be for performers to find suitable rehearsal and teaching space and is aware of the need of more dance and performing arts training and performance spaces in the Blue Mountains.

As an internationally touring performer, internationally published pinup model and regular at rockabilly, vintage and custom culture events Porcelain doesn't want to provide another community hall space to "fill a gap" but a completely immersive, fitted out vintage class and performance experience with details paying homage to vintage décor and aesthetics.

Vintage Aesthetics - not values will be the order of the day with the Sock Hop setting out to be an inclusive space where all are welcome and can feel safe, welcome and celebrated! There will be classes and event opportunities for children and adults and the Sock Hop wishlist for the future to eventually include a vintage styles milk bar where  event producers can offer vintage diner style food and malt milkshakes to their guests as well as creating an intimate performance space as well as class and workshop location! All of Porcelain's dance classes focus on self love, confidence building and body positivity as well as technical dance development and this ethos will be carried on throughout all of "The Sock Hop's" day to day operations. Classes and events will be offered for all genders, ages and abilities!

Porcelain has produced shows across Australia and hopes to bring some big name performers to "The Sock Hop". Providing a venue that is so much more than four walls and power but provides a complete experience is a drawcard for entertainers and artists and one of the benefits of a regular in house venue means some of the risk is minimised for each class/workshop making it more feasible to bring some big names to our beautiful "City of The Arts".

The aim is for "The Sock Hop" to become a home away from home for locals, visitors, artists and patrons alike.

How can you help?

We can't do this without you! You play a pivotal role in making the magic happen! We aren't asking for something for nothing. Listed in the perks of the campaign are some amazing experiences, classes, workshops, shows, goodies and much that you can purchase. We are pretty confident these are already attractive purchases already! But here you get triple rewards! You get to purchase some great items/ experiences, you get that nice warm feeling in your heart knowing you are contributing to the establishment of a great resource for local performance artists and you are getting a discount on the items/ experiences as well. That is not just win win, it is win win win! <3

Why do we need help?

Central to everything Porcelain and Wild Warrior Women produces is the commitment to all performers being paid fairly for their work and events pay above award conditions to performers and artists who work hard to hone their craft to entertain crowds. With this commitment to providing quality entertainment and paying performers well we have put aside what we can towards a new venue but with the task of continually having to find new venues, market to new audiences in new locations, establish new followings and pay performers and all show expenses it would take decades to get the capital together to create a resource that is needed NOW. With YOUR help we can start providing you with this resource much sooner and everyone can reap the rewards! <3

As if you need more convincing about how this is all WIN, WIN, WIN here are some testimonials from some amazing local humans about what Porcelain offers in some of her classes and why a space where it could be offered more would be beneficial!

The funds donated will go directly to subsidise startup lease and fitout costs for "The Sock Hop"s new premises! This will include vintage themed decor and styling and installation of a performance space with lights and an inhouse PA, mini bowling area, (like bowling but without the heavy balls and suitable for everyone like mini gold but for vintage bowlers and no need for specific shoes!), eventual vintage bar (serving milk bar treats and  subject to permits and permissions eventually big kids drinks for adults events) and audience seating! Should we reach our goal by 8th February we will be in the new space for Term 1 however if the goal takes a little longer to reach that is fine and we will aim for a Term 3 studio opening! Any money raised above our goal will go directly to improving "The Sock Hop"s facilities and offerings.

STUDENT TESTIMONIALS

"When I first started dancing, I joined one of Porcelain’s dance classes just to have fun and build my self-esteem; Porcelain was an amazing instructor and the groups she coached were so welcoming. When I decided to perform and was more interested in the professional side of burlesque, Porcelain stepped up her coaching game right alongside me. She taught me how to present myself professionally, how to value myself and showed me what level of professionalism I should expect from others. Her shows always meet the gold standard of how performers should be treated, and through experience and discussion with Porcelain, I know what to look for moving forward.

My personal journey is just starting, but already I’ve learned about choreography, music choices, hair and makeup, and supporting other performers and navigating the performance world. I wanted self-esteem and a bit of sexy laughs, I found a family and a level of strength that I didn’t know I had in me, and I owe a lot of that to Porcelain."

"I met Porcelain in 2016 when I decided to join dance classes following a major life event. While I was just expecting bit of fun and to maybe meet some new people, her workshops and classes have been instrumental in my personal healing and growth in these last two and a half years. The space that she creates along with the people and culture she nurtures gave me a place to explore myself as a person, as a woman and as a creative being. It opened me up to exploring, expressing and loving my vulnerabilities and my strengths and has lead me to connecting with people who are conducive and supportive of all I have discovered.

As I grew and the options for solo pieces arose, Porcelain helped me to navigate the ins and outs of creating a solo act. As a complete performance novice, her advice and guidance on the art of choreography, audience engagement and expression were eye opening and exciting. What I appreciated most was her utmost encouragement of these solo pieces being mine. She brainstormed, gave suggestions and discussed directions and technique with me, but the creative direction was always my own choice.

Through my practice I have also come to greatly admire the subtlety she is able to weave in to her performances and group choreography. She has a wonderful understanding of the small movements, suggestions and gestures that go seemingly unnoticed yet produce a strong impact on audiences. Whether it is personal, funny, emotional, provocative, or even confusing, she is always thinking about how to bring the audience in to be part of a meaningful journey with the performer.

I am forever grateful for the support and guidance Porcelain has given me in both my personal and performance journey and cannot recommend her highly enough."

QUEENIE LA MER

"I attended a show directed by Porcelain for the first time in 2014, and after seeing the performance I thought "I need to try that". I had studied dance as a child, but had been away from the dance world for years. Talking to Porcelain after the show about her workshops, I knew that I wanted to dance again. I was absolutely petrified getting on stage the next month, but Porcelain and her experienced performers were there encouraging us to just get out there and give it our all. In the performing arts there can be such a pressure to look and act in a certain way, however in Porcelain's classes she encouraged us all to see our own worth as a unique individual. The women I met at workshops became friends, and I started to believe in myself as much as I believed in them. By my second or third performance, I was well and truly hooked.

I had never before had the privilege of working alongside such an inspiring group of women, with Porcelain there to teach, direct, manage and wear so many different hats. From being scared to get on the stage at the beginning, I started to ask about doing more and more performances. Towards the end of 2015 I created my first solo routine, with a huge amount of help from Porcelain. She not only guided me through how to choreograph my own routine, but also provided priceless advice on stage presence, costumes, makeup and dealing with my own anxiety. There is always a new and innovative show or routine up Porcelain's sleeve, and I am amazed by her ability to breath life into her creations. She shows impressive skills in choreography and costuming, as well as event and people management, time and time again. Not only this, at each of her classes and events, she fosters a safe space for performers, newbies and attendees.

There is no way I could be the performer and person I am now without Porcelain's support and guidance. I have seen her change not only my life, but the lives of uncountable women around her. This may be in the form of body positivity workshops, dance classes, amazing performances or festivals. I am so excited to see more of her work in the community, in whatever form that takes."
