THE WARM UP TOUR

Niska Napoleon is on a mission. Determined to become the breakout artist of 2015 she has quit her job and sold everything she owns to make her way across Canada. With this new-found freedom she hopes to network with industry professionals at events such as Aboriginal Music Week, The Indigenous Music Awards, Western Canadian Music Awards and BreakOut West. She is using the tour as a platform to collaborate with various musicians and mentors, and get her name out as a solo artist. This tour is an investment for Niska as she works to promote and launch her solo music career. Building relationships with local media, introducing herself to prominent venues and making new fans will set the tone for a successful fall tour. Hitting small reserves, pow wows and open mic nights across the country, she is proud to make fans the old fashioned way, one at a time.
With more than three cancelled shows right out of the gate, Niska was unable to afford gas to make it past Edmonton. Quickly sinking deep into debt, she was determined to make it to Winnipeg to attend Aboriginal Music Week. Taking control of the situation, she rushed off to the nearest pow wow, introduced herself to the coordinator and fought to get a spot to sing during dinner break. After reaching out to her native community, many young fans flooded the stage, the audience screamed for more and she raised enough gas money to make it to Winnipeg. With a new-found sense of support from her people and guidance from her ancestors, she continued on with a fearless outlook and a belief that she could find a way to finish the tour. When asked what motivates her to push through the struggles she faces as an emerging solo artist Niska explains,
"I went to the sweat lodge on the morning of the pow-wow looking for guidance and strength. The grandfathers spoke to me and I knew I had to continue on", she says. "whenever I feel very afraid and my pockets are empty, I remind myself that I am blessed with a voice, my songs, and the ability to travel. Those are very powerful gifts and I should not dare be any more selfish".
Without any finacial help this self-funded tour has put Niska in debt and incured costs to the sum of $5,700. With the expected overhead to return home projected to be upwards of $3000. In order to keep the tour on track financially, Niska was forced to send DJ Kookum home after reaching Winnipeg. With the money she raised from local musicians at Aboriginal Music Week she continued onward to Toronto with a full tank of gas and unwavering belief that she had everything she needed to succeed within herself.
Like a momma bear, she hits the highway searching for opportunities to feed her tour and keep herself on the road. Niska explains "being hungry is important, it pushes you to create opportunities that you wouldn't normally consider". To cover every angle of her promising tour, Niska has incorporated her second creative endeavour, her ASMR ( autonomous sensory meridian response) videos, which use her voice as a healing ambient instrument. Niska is offering personalized ASMR videos to her 4,741 YouTube subscribers in hopes that she can unify her fan base by delivering unique original content during her trip.
For Niska, this tour has evolved into a rite of passage that encompasses her transformation from a featured female vocalist to an artist within her own right.
"people spend most of their twenties going to school or raising children, in some ways I feel behind in my life, but then I remember that I too have been working hard and struggling for a goal, to become a better artist. The launch of my debut album is my graduation, my wedding, countless hours and thousands of dollars. I owe it to the last decade to give this album my all."
