Help Turn the Tide on Type 2 Diabetes with TLC

The Lifestyle Club (TLC) is an award-winning and QISMET accredited online health coaching service created by the charity, Public Health Collaboration (1171887).

Over 700 people have already benefited from TLC, with many putting their type 2 diabetes completely into remission. Let's take TLC from helping hundreds of people to helping millions of people.

I've reversed type 2 diabetes and feel like a new man! Mark, TLC participant since June 2021

Joining TLC has given me back my enjoyment of running and reversed my diabetes. Kevin, TLC Participant since Jan 2022

To do that, we need to scientifically investigate our real-world results through a University-led research study. This will allow us to compare our approach with existing diabetes services and be commissioned on a national level.

What the study will look like?

Partnering with the University of Surrey we plan to monitor 100 participants for up to 2 years. The objectives of the study are:

  • Gather robust data at baseline, and a range of time points up to 2 years.
  • Demonstrate type 2 diabetes remission and medication reduction
  • Identify success factors - i.e. who does best on TLC
  • Record the changes people are making to their diet following a TLC course
  • Report on attrition at all stages
  • Quantify the feasibility of rolling this out across the UK.

The study will recruit participants through the later part of 2023 with them joining courses in January 2024. We will also seek input on our study design through a focus group of existing TLC participants.

I was sleepwalking into type 2 diabetes and TLC has helped me take control of my health. Syamantak, TLC participant since October 2021
What does the study cost?

We will employ a part-time Research Dietitian, who will measure each participant's height, weight, waist circumference, and blood pressure and take a full blood panel at each time point. In addition, there will be screening for food addiction, an empowerment survey, 2-day diet history and a questionnaire about their circumstances. The funding will also pay for statistical support from the university to crunch the numbers. We will need to run a campaign in Guildford to raise public awareness too. The cost of TLC and university academic staff is already covered.

If we raise £50,000 this will pay for setting up the study and measurements at baseline, end of course, three and six months. However, if we raise £63,000 we can also follow up with participants after 2 years!

I feel so much better, I have reversed my diabetes, it's hard to remember life before TLC! Deborah, TLC Participant since May 2022
