Tyler's Surgery Fund

Hello! My name is Tyler. I’m a 24-year-old trans person and I’m here to raise money for top surgery! After years of living as male, I have finally decided that I am mentally, emotionally, and physically ready to complete my transition. Although I am an employed college graduate, I do not have access to the kind of money I will need to pay for this procedure.

About Me:

Tyler is…

...a scientist. I graduated from the University of Cincinnati about a year ago with a BS in neuroscience and a BA in psychology.

...a graduate of the Racial Awareness Program (RAPP). This program was the foundation of my social justice knowledge. It inspired me to become more involved with LGBTQ activism.

...a member of GenderBloc. GenderBloc is a queer activist group that focuses on transgender issues. It is also where I got my start as an activist by doing Trans 101 presentations at UC and at conferences such as Creating Change.

...a YouthResource Peer Educator. Advocates for Youth, specifically YouthResource, has taught me about sex education, abortion, LGBTQ rights, reproductive health and so much more. Advocates for Youth gave me the knowledge and skills necessary for any form of activism including (but not limited to) facilitating workshops, planning events, and lobbying.

...the founding president of Colors of Pride. The purpose of Colors of Pride is to facilitate discussions and offer social support for queer students of color and allies at UC.

...a GLSEN volunteer. I started volunteering with GLSEN after I graduated as a way to stay connected to LGBTQ youth and policies outside of UC.

My Goal:
Most insurance plans do not cover transgender related care, so I’ve been taught early on to avoid being too optimistic about getting help from insurance. However, my insurance has agreed to cover some of the cost. After my deductible, they will cover 80% of in-network expenses. On top of the 20% I would have to pay with insurance, I will also have to pay an additional $1500 fee to the surgeon that cannot be covered by insurance.

My surgery is scheduled for November 5, 2014 with Dr. Medalie in Cleveland, OH. Based on my conversations with my insurance company, I have calculated that approximately $5000 will cover the out of pocket cost for this procedure (if insurance covers their part) as well as the cost of travel.

Thanks for Your Help!
Since starting my transition, I have become so much more confident in myself and who I am meant to be. I believe that having this surgery will change my life for the better and anyone who loves and supports me will see immediate effects.

I would really appreciate any amount you can give (even if it’s just kind words and clicking the share button). I’ve made it this far with the help and support of my family and friends. I love you all and I am eternally grateful for your contribution.
