The Human Ear - A Canadian Premiere

When Lucy gets a knock at her door, she thinks it’s news of another familial tragedy; instead, her estranged brother has come back home after a decade away. Could it really be him? Her father was killed at war. Her brother retaliated and ran away from home. Her mother was killed in an attack on a city bus. Alone, she has tried to retain the memories of the people closest to her, yet these fragments became ghosts that haunt her doorstep. Ears are like fingerprints. They identify the truth when there is no one to trust. But evidence doesn’t matter when two people truly need one another.

We are excited to debut the Canadian premiere of the critically acclaimed play, The Human Ear by Alexandra Wood!

Who We Are
We investigate the Untold Wants - the driving force of the human experience - through the examination of individual perspectives. With the belief that the arts can open eyes and make us feel, we raise our unique voices toward the expression of universal truths.

By collaborating with emerging, energetic artists and theatremakers, as well as engaging the wisdom of versed practitioners, we will illuminate these truths. We are going back to the roots. A place where individual ideas have a common ground. Putting on productions to which anyone can relate, no matter the style or type of theatre. Allowing the audience to collectively share a one of a kind world. Letting them be moved and entertained. Life is a felt experience, asking us to stop and pay attention. We want to provide the space where that can happen.

The company's founders are Jessica Aquila Cymerman and Éanna O'Dowd. Jessica is from Los Angeles, and Éanna is from Galway in Ireland. They met while studying their masters in theatre at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. The company has just come off a successful run of the Irish premiere of Reasons to be Pretty by Neil LaBute in Dublin.

How We Will Allocate the Funds
This money will all go into getting the show together and the quality of the production. It will be used to pay for the rights to the text, the venue, the cost of equipment, publicity and the people involved. We firmly believe as a company that the production quality is paramount, and strive to work with dedicated, passionate artists, and are avid about making sure all who come into the company are financially compensated in some small way.

Why This Means So Much to Us
We are working to uphold the importance of bringing new and dynamic voices to the stage. Alexandra Wood's piece is close to our hearts. Her play holds up a mirror to the individuals touched by tragedies in a stripped down and empathetic way. It is exciting to us to be able to expose Vancouver, and greater Canadian audiences, to this exploration of identity in a dangerous world, and the consequences of our actions and words. This is a poignant play about family and the guilt that clings to it, who's unusual approach to broaching those subjects, we hope will be moving and entertaining.

The Human Ear will be our Vancouver debut, after a successful run of Reasons to Be Pretty by Neil LaBute in Dublin. With the support of audience interpretation and participation in these worlds we are continuing to build, this piece will open the door to exploring more investigative and important pieces of theatre.

If we were to reach our goal we would be eternally thankful!!

When We Need Your Help
Now! We need your help as soon as possible to fund the rights to the text, sourcing props, and securing the venue, designers and crew. We are attempting to raise at least half our target by the middle of June, then at the latest a week before opening.

Any support means something. No amount is too small.

Please do not hesitate to be in touch.

Thank you!

Jessica and Éanna
