TeamUP: Uplifting Punjab

Punjab, a culturally rich region in Northern India brings a variety of agricultural crops, folk music to dance to through Bhangra and Gidha, wool and cotton to weave into clothes, and is home to the highest population of the world's fifth largest religion, Sikhism. Unfortunately, this region today lacks sustainable facilities whether it be in the education system or in the lack of access to health resources. A group of students at the UC Berkeley, Stanford, Harvard, UCLA, UC Davis and other universities has taken the initiative to develop projects and a curriculum to slowly, but sustainably provide Punjab pathways through which the people can be uplifted and be provided the simple means to live an equitable lifestyle.
Our organization, Team UP, or Team Uplifting Punjab, aims to work directly with the people of Punjab. In December 2016, we traveled to four remote villages of Punjab. The four villages we assessed were Awan Khalsa, Chone, Jhampur, and Barapind. We also visited different schools in these villages and conducted workshops.
Our goal is to teach academic material in interactive manners (which the locals are unaccustomed to), motivate students to achieve higher education and pursue college, and simultaneously teach the students simple health education. We aim to cover topics such as how to gain admission to a university outside of Punjab, how to study and be a good student, how to prevent germs from spreading (washing hands!), how to make healthy food choices, and so much more!
Currently, we are running a career center, an after school study project, and research on addiction. This year, we are scaling up to 5 career centers and 5 after school learning centers. We are also planning to start a computer lab/library so that students can learn to code and to provide a safe space to learn, a waste management system run by local volunteers in a rural town, and a sports academy in a village to coach badminton and Volleyball. We need about $10,000 for these three new projects.
