Horton Public Library - LED Sign

Our town is in the midst of an amazing effort: Reinvent Horton, spawned by the interest of Marcus Lemonis (entrepreneur and host of CNBC’s reality series The Prophet), to help us rebuild our downtown area, attract new businesses and improve the life of our community members.
The Horton Library began 3 years ago to reinvent itself by 1) changing our mission statement to “It’s all about community, learning and fun!” and 2) undertaking a major renovation last year to our 75 year old building to make the library more inviting, up-to-date and provide a comfortable meeting/activity space for the community. Last October we were selected to participate in a Destination Library Grant project through Northeast Kansas Library System. The grant process runs through August 31, 2015. A Destination Library is one that accepts a larger civic role, balancing their traditional needs and operations with connections to the wider community. We began to evaluate what we could do for the community to enrich their lives and broaden our impact in the community.
This year through interviews with community groups and organizations it became increasing clear that there is a major component missing in our community’s endeavors – getting the word out. The Library wants to be an informational hub for the community – by partnering with a range of organizations, groups and businesses to inform people of the community and surrounding areas about civic, educational or fun programs, activities, fundraisers and general community information. We hope to be able to help the City, local businesses, school district, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, 4-H clubs, church groups, our neighboring Kickapoo Nation, or individuals sponsoring a charitable cause by promoting these events to the community. With the library being centrally located in town, next to the post office, on the highway through town and at the corner of our downtown area, an LED sign would be the best way to grab the attention of our community and share all the great things we, as well as the rest of the community has going on. Library staff would be responsible for maintaining the Community Bulletin Board and updating it as needed.
