Lyanna and I started our long-distance relationship in 2013. She lives in Vancouver, BC, and I live in Nashville, TN, which is about 2,500 miles apart.
Every morning we chat on the phone, we rarely miss an opportunity to call over lunch, and every night before bed we're on Skype or FaceTime. Despite the distance, we've been inseparable from the start and remain so today.
Often times we would create silly little games for each other like, "Make something that says 'I love you'", or "Let's put on a fashion show for each other", or "24 hours to make something funny for each other". It's kept us going strong, and it's part of the reason why we're so crazy about each other today.
It's pretty obvious that we're nuts over each other. Anybody who has seen us together can see it in the way we look at each other.
Well after some months of being together in a long-distance relationship, Lyanna bought a plane ticket to Nashville so that we could be together as a couple for the first time.
The date was November 27th, 2014, and I don't think I had ever been so excited in my life! I had that rush that you get when you're about to do something completely crazy, like diving off a cliff or jumping out of a plane. Something big was about to happen.
I arrived at the airport moments after she landed. Lyanna sent me a text message saying that she was at baggage claim. I remember running up and down the stairs at the Nashville airport, looking everywhere for her.
I finally spotted her in the distance. This is it!!! I knew with every ounce of my being that I wanted to spend the rest of my life with this woman, and there she was in front of me about 50 feet away.
I stood there for a moment and held up a sign that said "Lyanna Smith". As soon as she spotted me, she came running. Just before she got to me I flipped the sign around and it said "will you marry me?"
As you can see, she tackled me to the ground and said "yes!" It was shortly after that, that we had our first kiss.
It might have been the craziest thing that I've ever done, but it was absolutely worth it. If I could turn back time I wouldn't have changed a single thing about it. I'm now engaged to the woman of my dreams.
It's been well over a year since that proposal. We've had several visits with each other, daily calls, regular texting etc.
I once told Lyanna that every weekend I would write her a love note to let her know how much she means to me, and I've kept true to that promise. I've sent her almost 200 love notes, each one uniquely expressing how I feel about her. I've asked myself if I would ever stop, but I can honestly say that I don't think I can. Throughout our marriage, during the best times and the worst, I will always love my wife, and I will always let her know it.
Lyanna and I are both church staff and work hard to help people in our communities. We're both very committed to what we do, and intend to keep our relationship long-distance for just a little longer.
Until the time that we're together in person on a permanent basis, we're looking forward to having an amazing wedding and honeymoon!
In the first love note that I ever wrote to Lyanna, I told her that everyone wants to have a good story to tell their kids one day. I said that our story was the only story that I would want to tell, because we would create the most amazing story together.
If you like our story, we would very much appreciate any help to put on our wedding and honeymoon! It's been 8 months since we last saw each other in person, and we'd love to enjoy an amazing wedding and honeymoon together! Thank you for hearing our story!
