Doctor of Audiology Brenda Tullio to take Humanitarian Mission Trip to Dominican Republic
Together with her son, Brenda Tullio (AuD) will travel with the Haitian Humanitarian Assistance and Relief Team during the second week of May.
HHART missions are organized and led by the Rotary Club of Wasaga Beach to improve the quality of life of the poor living in the Puerto Plata and Sosua areas of the Dominican Republic (DR), undertaking projects to relieve poverty, promote education, improve health care, and develop public facilities.
Who are these people? During the 1900's Haitian people were recruited to work in the sugar cane fields of the DR. The companies held the identification papers of all workers. Before the end of the 20th century the companies went bankrupt and the cane fields were abandoned. Workers were unable to recover their identification papers. With no papers to prove their citizenship, return to Haiti was impossible. In the DR they and their children have no rights to health care and education; they are shunned as illegal immigrants and are stateless. They are uneducated, unskilled and cannot find work. While several humanitarian aid groups have cared for these people in recent years, doing great work and raising awareness, many Haitians are still living in squalid conditions and are of poor health.
Brenda and her son will meet and witness the living conditions of these people. They will visit and serve in the small sugar cane worker towns, most of which have no running water, no school and no washroom facilities. They will see how those lucky enough to be relocated are trying their best to get healthy and improve their lot in life. They will help feed the children, tend to the sick and elderly, repair decrepit homes, distribute clothing, bedding and livestock to those most in need, teach new vocational skills and encourage community development. They will spend time with the people to acknowledge them as persons, learn about their culture, worries and dreams, and provide them hope for a better future. And, as a first for HHART, Brenda will work with the medical team to provide hearing care and hearing aids to those in need.
Brenda & Aiden are grateful to accept any donations on behalf of HHART 7, to help fund the many projects and health care endeavours to be undertaken.
Thank you for your support and helping us to make a difference in the lives of these impoverished and disadvantaged people.
