What is Vigilante Kindness?
It's that thumping in your heart reminding you that you're called to be outrageously, outlandishly kind. It's the flush in your cheeks when you find yourself exacting kindness in the most bereft corners of the earth. It is the tender sweetness of holding vigil for people around the world who are desperate for a kind word and a kind deed. It's becoming a self-appointed doer of kindness.
In the summer of 2013, I returned to Northern Uganda and, with the help of my friends and family, I exacted Vigilante Kindness
on schools and villages. On behalf of my fellow Vigilantes of Kindness, I was able to: give 30 pairs of school shoes to primary students, teach writing classes to secondary students, provide medicine and medical care to students in need, purchase textbooks for a school library, pay for uniforms for students in need, buy a bed for a student in need, buy 4 pigs for a village recovering from war, support 2 local artists, feed hungry children, purchase fencing materials for a local school and a host of other acts of kindness that were birthed from asking one bold question: What do you need and how can I help?
In the summer of 2014, I'm returning to the land and the people I've come to love. Several Vigilante of Kindness projects are already underway.
The fist project involves bringing portable solar lights to students so they can study at night in places where there isn't electricity. This was a request many students asked for last year, but I was unable to find solar lights that wouldn't also be a fire hazard with their bed nets. I've found the perfect lights here and will bring them with me to distribute to the students there.
I'm also collecting funds to deposit into the treasury of the Bungatira community group. Bungatira is a village and their community group is dedicated to caring for their members by issuing microloans to pay for farm equipment, for farm animals, for health education, for counseling servives, for needed medicines, and to pay the school fees for their children.
I'm thrilled to partner with Educate for Change and facilitate writing workshops with local students, including helping senior high students write Acholi fables that have been passed down from generation to generation, but never written. Once recorded, these fables will be illustrated by the students and published in books that will then be used to teach young children to read.
The final Vigilante of Kindness project is a Work Study Project wherin students can work using their skills and passions to earn wages to pay their school fees. Some older kids will lead art workshops with the younger kids and other older kids will tutor the younger kids.
Beyond that, I'm going to partner with villages and schools and simply ask, "What do you need and how can I help?"
