Rebecca’s Chemo Closet Fundraiser
The month of June is National Cancer Survivor Month
A few years ago, I started "Rebecca's Chemo Closet", located in Newtown Square in the Cancer Center. Rebecca’s Chemo Closet is a free clothing and accessory location for local Cancer patients, who are in need of items while going through treatments. All items; clothing, scarves, wigs, blankets, nutrition drinks etc. are either donated or bought by me. There is no cost to the patients.
I have wonderful friends and family who have donated clothing and other necessities, also monetary donations and every penny has gone to help other patients. While my Rebecca's Chemo Closet is small, it is helping local patients and it feels good to give back to others.
The need for clothing, scarves, essentials etc. has grown.
Rebecca’s Chemo Closet is in need of donations.
Please help if you can.
I was diagnosed with Lung Cancer – Non Small Cell Adenocarcinoma Stage 3A in October of 2010, a few months after losing my own father to Cancer. Cancer is a terrifying journey. As I started treatment and started losing a great deal of weight (and hair- honestly the hair loss wasn’t my main concern), I realized that my clothes were too big. It made me sad to put my clothes on and watch them slide down. I purged all of my work clothes and daily clothes that didn’t fit me anymore, I donated them to charity, so that others could use what I no longer could.
To go from being a person who had always donated to charity, to being the person that needed charity was a very humbling experience. It was sometimes emotionally hard to accept what was offered, but there were a few local charities that helped me and my family out in a great way and I am so thankful for them.
One of the things I didn’t think of when I purged my clothes, was that I would need new clothing, something that had become unaffordable. I lost my job after 12 weeks on FMLA. I bought 2 pairs of small stretchy jeans and a few shirts, and then realized that as treatment progressed that my size kept changing as I lost more weight. Depending on a Cancer patient’s treatment plan, some people lose a great deal of weight, while others gain weight, our sizes fluctuate, and our supply of clothing and essentials don’t always keep up with those changes. I had 2 head scarves, a few free wigs (which I opted not to wear, it felt too strange to me), along with a few hats, bald heads really get cold! I had a great chemo nurse and friends who helped supply me with nutrition/protein drinks when I could no longer eat and couldn’t afford the nutrition drinks. As my treatment progressed I became more aware that other patients that I did chemo with or met at support events were going through these changes and issues as well and were also in need of a helping hand.
Rebecca’s Chemo Closet is in need of donations. Please help if you can.
Also if you live locally, I am in need of gently worn clothing for men, all sizes and women's clothes all sizes. (no shoes please) Please message me on FB if local.
With love and hugs
