I am requesting financial help for stem cell regeneration ankle surgery from the Regenexx Center in Broomfield, Colorado.

The amount covers the procedure cost.

This procedure has helped so many patients (especially amateur or professional athletes and seniors) in their quest for safe, successful recovery from injuries or osteoarthritis.  Sometimes called degenerative joint disease or “wear and tear” arthritis, osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common chronic condition of the joints. It occurs when the cartilage or cushion between joints breaks down leading to pain, stiffness and swelling pain.  My Medicare coverage will not cover the cost of this procedure.

Quoting the Regenexx website (Regenexx.com) Regenexx® Stem Cell Treatments are the world’s most advanced, non-surgical orthopedic stem cell therapies for common joint injuries and degenerative conditions, such as osteoarthritis and avascular necrosis. These patented, next-generation stem cell injection procedures utilize an individual’s own bone-marrow derived stem cells and blood platelet rich plasma mixtures to amplify the body’s ability to heal damaged tissues, tendons, ligaments, cartilage, spinal disc, or bone.

Regenexx Stem Cell and Blood Platelet Procedures offer a viable alternative for individuals suffering from joint pain, or who may be considering elective surgery or joint replacement due to injury or arthritis. Patients avoid the lengthy periods of downtime and painful rehabilitation that follow invasive surgeries. (Regenexx.com)

My ankle story began at age eighteen. I woke up in my dorm room at CU unable to put any pressure on my left ankle.  My family took me to the top orthopedic doctors in Boulder and Denver, Colorado. Finally, after six painful, frustrating months, a top specialist in Colorado Springs performed exploratory surgery.

This revealed that I had a staphylococcus infection localized in the cartridge.  The infection reduced it to a water type substance.  I was given round the clock IV injection tetracycline for the first week. Then they used my hips for shots every four hours for one week, following that with once a day shots for another week.

The recovery took three years with many castes and wet wraps.  I fought with everything I had to walk without crouches or a brace.  During this ordeal, a cowboy told me that athlete’s recovering from ankle problems usually wore cowboy boots. The boot part braced the ankle and the heels helped with the stiffness.  From his advice, I was able to walk (never run); if I wore boots or shoes with neoprene heels with at least two inches of height

The specialist predicted I would only be able to walk a couple of years before having the nerves cut to reduce the pain.  It was my opinion then; as it is now in the twenty-first century; that cutting nerves is eighteenth century medicine.

From that time until age fifty-two, I was able to lead a somewhat normal walking existence.  Everyday there was pain; however it was manageable with hours of ice packs and ibuprofen.

At that time, x-rays revealed that my ankle was complete bone on bone with no recovery options other than surgery. I had to take total disability. The waiting period zeroed my savings and retirement accounts.

Now at age sixty-six, I can no longer take ibuprofen or any other pain medications due to the distress they cause to the lining of my stomach. The ice packs only reduce the swelling, not the pain.

An option for recovery is a total ankle replacement.  From my research and discussions with surgeons I have found that most total ankle replacement surgeries are covered by Medicare.  However, the recovery time, pain and high risk of another staphylococcus  infection is so great, that I fail to see any advantage of this procedure.

The longevity of the replacements is from five to fifteen years, at best. Researchs indicates that the success rates are very low.  Another surgery to remove the ankle replacement and cut the nerves in about nine out of 10 cases.

Your financial help by donating to my Go Fund Me account would turn the impossible to  the possible.   My gratitude for being able to walk without pain due to your kindness and generosity, might in some measure, compare to your being able to do something you love.

Walking without pain would make me "over the rainbow" with joy, joy and more joy. Thank you very much.

 Sincerely,
Edith (Edy) Johnson
