In May 2011, one month before traveling to Belize to get married, my then fiancé was severally injured in a hit and run motorcycle accident. He broke his neck at the C-7 level and now lives as a quadriplegic. Realizing how precious life really was, as soon as Nick was released from Valley Medical Rehabilitation Facility, we flew to Las Vegas and got married by the one and only, Elvis Presley (impersonator). It was by no means the romantic wedding we had originally planned, but for us, it was very special.
One year after the accident, Nick was laid off from his job. Letting nothing hold him back from living life to the fullest, Nick took on his new role as a stay-at-home father to his two step-children without reservation.
Last year, we decided to expand our family and were ecstatic when learned we had created a new, little life to love.
When it came time to purchase a car seat and stroller, we researched endless looking for a wheelchair adaptable devise that would allow Nick to push his wheelchair while holding and attending to the baby. We looked at baby carriers, trailers that connected to the back of his chair, you name it, and we considered it. However, nothing seemed realistic. We were surprised at the lack of adaptive gear available to parents in wheelchairs.
After months of research, Nick decided to take matters into his own hands. Using pieces from an existing stroller, coupled with PVC piping, foam tubes, and clamps, Nick created a rough prototype seen above. Although the concept piece works well, it still needs engineering to perfect the design and functionality.
Nick and I would like to patent the idea and design of our wheelchair-stroller attachment and we are looking for monetary support to do so.
Please help us help the wheelchair community by creating this amazing invention that will benefit a largely under represented population of our community
