Wish Upon A Dog ~ Service Dog Fund
Donation protected
I have come to GoFundMe to help pay for a service dog to help with my seizures. I have been approved to receive a dog from Sit Service Dogs located in Illinois. The cost of the dog is $9000 plus $2000 for travel to get the dog to me. For those of you that see this as a huge amount for a dog (I did at first!) The dog costs more than 20k to feed, board, train and it TAKES 2 YEARS to train a successful service dog. And these dogs are SO worth it.
My name is Jessica. I have lived with grand mal seizures for 15 years. They are terrifying and draining. I have injured myself many times when I have them and woken up many times alone and afraid. If you have never known anyone with grand mal seizures, they are horrible. I have no warning when I am going to have them and from what my family has told me, I throw a hand in the air and let out a high pitched scream. From there, I fall. I fall into or onto whatever may be in my way. During this time, I don't know anything. For the following 5-7 minutes, I shake and kick. I bite my tongue every time because I shake so violently. After that is over, I slowly wake up. That doesn't mean that I am back to being me. Its like i'm not in my own body. I cant find my words and cant hold myself up. I do strange things, like filling my shoes with food because I think its a bowl. These episodes cause me emotional and physical pain but also my family hurts too. My 5 year old has asked me if I die when it happens. Having a seizure dog to assist with things like calling for help, moving items that may hurt me or just being there for me when I wake up. Medication does not help and over the past 15 years, no doctor has found anything wrong in my brain. I want to have some kind of comfort. Some ounce of safety.
This is a photo of me after one of my seizures. I fell into a desk and gave myself a black eye.
I may have seizures, but I have never let it stop me from looking forward. I have a small business about raising backyard chickens and a small online store. A dog will allow me to "seize the day" and feel safer in my day to day life.
Thank you all so much for your help. Please share with your friends. Every single dollar helps.
~ When I told my kids I was approved to get my service dog, my 5 year old said "Mommy, youre getting your medicine dog?"
I love them so much!
