Support WORI's shelter for GBV survivors

Shelter residents during a yoga and wellness session

Thanks to previous fundraising and the tireless efforts of everyone involved, Nyonga Women's Shelter is now open! Day services began in 2019 and in spring 2020, Nyonga Women's Shelter welcomed its first residents. We still need urgent support with funding to keep the shelter running and improve services. Please scroll down to find out more about how the shelter is succeeding, and see how you can help. Alternatively, visit our dedicated shelter website.

Urgent Needs (spring 2021):
1) A CAR
- As more survivors of violence come to the shelter, WORI requires a new car to be able to support survivors in accessing legal aid, going to the police, accessing health centres and for the staff in community reintegration proceedings.
2) MORE BEDS - We have seen a huge rise in intakes since the pandemic began, and we require new beds to be able to accommodate as many survivors of violence as possible.
3) UPDATING THE CHILDREN'S COUNSELLING ROOM - many women coming to the shelter bring their children, so we need to buy new furniture and toys for the children's counselling room.
4) A CHILDREN'S PLAY AREA - we have an outdoor play area for the children, but we need more play equipment so the children have a space to play and have fun while they stay at the shelter.
5) LIGHTNING CONDUCTOR - the shelter building is huge, and a conductor is needed to keep it safe during storms.

Ongoing Needs:
Your funding also goes to supporting our ongoing operational needs, such as:
o   day-to-day running costs to ensure a safe, welcoming, healing space (eg. food, hygiene items, office supplies, telephone bills for phone counselling)
o   caretakers who look after the residents of the shelter
o   a legal officer who assists the women in court proceedings
o   emergency medical personnel
o   trained counsellors and social workers who provide psycho-social personnel
o   security personnel, as some surivors are at risk of being followed to the Shelter

Your donations will support our existing grants to ensure long-term operational capacity and enable WORI to support as many survivors of GBV as possible.

More about Nyonga Women's Shelter

Operating a shelter for women survivors of gender-based violence (GBV) has been one of WORI's large-scale goals for years. It was conceived to help the many women suffering from GBV, who need a safe space in which to escape and heal from their trauma, and receive support to plan for their new life. Women's shelters are a new concept in Uganda, and WORI's Nyonga Women's Shelter is the first of its kind in its region. At capacity, it can host 30 women and 20 children at a time.

The shelter provides these 4 vital services to survivors fleeing situations of gender-based violence:
1) Consistent counselling and psycho-social support
2) Emergency medical aid
3) Legal aid
4) A safe and healing space

Thank you so much for choosing to support us in this hugely important work; any contribution is gratefully received.

NB: The safety of the women we support is WORI's top priority. Consent was obtained from the survivors of GBV who are featured in these photos. Their eyes have been covered to help protect their identities.
