Colin Joins the Atlas Lab,Amsterdam

Since I was a child I have always been deeply interested in world cultures and the myriad musical styles indigenous to each. I deeply believe in the power of music to break down barriers and unite those who, on the surface, may be completely different, thereby fostering peace and stability worldwide. And during my music career, I have made it a point to compose and play world music with the intention of uniting various people from differing cultures through the power of music.
Soon after earning my Bachelor’s degree in Music, I became the first non-Chinese member of the Phoenix Chinese Art Ensemble conducted by Shangao Cai. Four years later, I founded and lead New Moon Orchestra, Pittsburgh’s first traditional Chinese music orchestra dedicated to the performance of Chinese and East Asian repertoire. The group premiered their work at a concert at the historic Carnegie Music Hall.
In 2009, I founded and lead the Pangean Orchestra, a group composed of 40-plus musicians who play uncommon instruments that are unique to different countries around the globe. The group performs ancient folk songs to modern electronica and other music. My goal was to give unusual instruments a bigger stage in America. Pangean Orchestra is still performing to this day in Arizona.
And now I’m about to embark on what I know will be one of the most exceptional world music experiences of my life.
I have been invited to join Atlas Labs 2016 – a gathering of the world’s best World Music musicians in one place for an intensive music laboratory during which participants write, perform, and explore musical possibility.
To spend weeks, playing, composing, learning, and connecting with these masters of world music is a dream come true. My hope is to use the knowledge I gain at Atlas to not only make the Pangean Orchestra an even stronger musical ensemble, but also a force for cultural diplomacy.
Unfortunately, Atlas is not a free experience, so I need help funding this unprecedented experience. The funds raised here will go toward my travel to and from Amsterdam as well as my meals.
Together we can bridge the gap of understanding cultures through the commonality of music, and art we all love.
