Mike Damen Recovery Fund

Mike Damen, farrier and dear friend to many, was badly burned when a propane release caused a flash fire while he was filling his tank for hot shoeing on Wednesday June 10th, 2015. Being the consummate professional that he is, Mike was wearing his safety glasses, saving his eyes. But he is in intensive care in Kamloops. The most recent update (June 15th), informed us that, thankfully, Mike only has 1st degree burns to his face, so it will heal fairly quickly and shouldn’t be scarred, but the much more serious burns on his arms won’t even be assessed for about a week. Because of injury to his airway, Mike is still breathing via a tube, but he is out of heavy sedation, alert, and writing notes. His wife, Yolanda, is by his side and their children are with him a lot, but for now family are the only visitors allowed, although anyone can visit with Yolanda at the hospital, which she really appreciates. We will post updates on Mike’s condition and prognosis and when he can receive visitors.
Mike’s Mennonite community is very supportive, but it is a small community and funds many important causes, including helping other families dealing with serious health issues. Aside for all of the costs associated with Yolanda and the kids being in Kamloops with Mike, they have a small farm, and all of the expenses that go along with that, so we’ve started this fund to help them focus on his recovery. Mike is such a kind person, not to mention an amazing farrier with a special gift for working with horses, so we and many others in the horse community wanted to do something to help him. Any contribution will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you!
