Reducing Ocean Plastics El Salvador

There is an important and critical environmental project starting in El Salvador. Sponsored by the Rotary club of Vancouver Arbutus, this project hopes to free large beach and offshore areas of accumulated toxic plastic and garbage, curtail large amounts of this waste into the Pacific Ocean, enable sustainable waste management services, and provide community awareness programs.
El Salvador is a small, beautiful, country with warm and welcoming people. Unfortunately, it has been struggling economically for some years and has been unable to provide adequate waste management services in many of the beach communities. The extensive use of pesticides has penetrated ground water, streams and rivers which flow to the marine environment. This program will improve the health and safety on beach areas for El Salvadorans and help curtail the free flow of plastic and garbage into the 300 kilometre shoreline of our Pacific Ocean.
We are partnering with the Rotary club of San Salvador Noroestre. They are providing logistics, organisation of volunteers, and have ensured commitment from community level governments of targeted beach communities to regularly remove garbage from receptacles once they are in place. We have had a generous local corporate donation of garbage receptacles for all beach areas. What we need now is funding for cleaning equipment, protective gear, educational material, media publicity costs and in some beaches, truck rentals to move garbage for pick up. The total estimated budget for this phase is $25,000 CAD for eight of the most populated beaches. We will do this project beach by beach as we are able. This is an entirely volunteer project with no paid participants. Rotary ensures strict monitoring and auditing of funds.
