Community Empowerment Resource

Flint Neighborhoods United is a coalition of block clubs, neighborhood associations, crime watch groups and concerned neighborhood leaders. These groups come together on the first Saturday of each month to share information and leverage their resources to create positive change throughout the city of Flint. Based on conditions in the city, the coalition has three goals; to improve communication among and between stakeholders at all levels; to create and maintain an environment that supports safe and healthy neighborhoods; to re-establish a citywide sense of community with a shared responsibility, which is the ultimate focus.
With an appreciation for the importance of connecting the different neighborhoods around the city, FNU decided a newspaper from, for, and about Flint’s communities would be the perfect vehicle. Flint Our Community Our Voice is the newspaper that evolved from these desires. The newspaper was established in 2012. Each month the paper provides stories about the civic engagement of groups across the city; concerns and observations from citizens and organizations; and opportunities for cooperative and collaborative efforts as our city is revitalized and reimagined. The publication shared in party stores; beauty and barbershops; public and private schools; community and church meetings connects communities and neighborhoods all across the city. Due to budgetary constraints the paper is in jeopardy of ending publication.
When asked about the paper, readers strongly agree it is a valuable resource and should be supported. The staff is committed to finding ways to finance production into the future but will require funds to continue publication until a solution is found. Therefore we are asking everyone to give as much as possible to help keep this valuable resource alive.
