Help for Hermen

Donation protected
It seems that when times are hard, that's when cats get sick. It is definitely the case with Hermen, an 8 year old tuxedo tom who is cheerful, loving, and quite fluffy. We adopted him from the Humane Society as a wee kitten and he has been nothing but a complete joy to our home.

Now he needs a little help with the expenses of veterinary treatment so that he can get the care he needs for elimination of a bladder stone. Your kind donations will be put to use in getting him the care he needs right now.

We are a family of two and it has been pretty easy to take care of ourselves, until recently. I suffered and anaphylactic event due to an allergy to a prescription medication and have been out of work since with varying medical problems from a prednisone fallout. Even though the medical bills have piled up, my spouse and I have been successful at keeping up with them, but at the expense of our savings.

Then on December 23rd, my spouse's place of employment shuttered its doors, leaving all the employees with a small (and heavily taxed) severance pay. This monetary goodbye is only enough to help with the daily living until the unemployment kicks in and not much extra. EBT benefits should be forthcoming which will help as well.

Then, Hermen got sick.

On January 4th, we had to take Hermen in to the emergency vet in the wee hours of the morning. He was urinating every few minutes while producing very little. He was obviously uncomfortable and we thought that it may be a crystal blockage. While at the emergency, he was diagnosed with a bladder stone. He was given a muscle relaxer to stop his bladder spasms, pain medication, and special canned food, then sent home with instructions to see our vet the next day.

We have now had Hermen in to our regular veterinary, where more x-rays were done and more food was prescribed. A surgical option is still being considered, though we are trying a dietary measure that is supposed to dissolve the bladder stone first. If this diet works, then it will be less expensive and less invasive than the alternative....and we are hoping it works.

The big problem for us is expense in our current unemployed states. We are already unable to pay for Hermen's current bills, and on January 25th, he has to go back in to the vet to have more x-rays to see if the diet is working toward dissolution of the stone. If not, then surgery.

I was raised to be a pull ourself up by your bootstraps sort of person, but no one ever said what you are supposed to do when the bootstraps break. So, I am asking for help and hoping the kindness of strangers will get Hermen the care he needs. Our family lost a cat last year to kidney failure, we don't want to have to worry that Hermen will follow her because we couldn't afford care.

All money we receive will go toward Hermen's bills and further care.

Currently we have an outstanding emergency vet bill of $372.00, x-rays and an exam from the regular vet of $175.83 and we are estimating that it will be the same cost when we take him in on January 25. His food is expensive, and we are estimating four months of food, just in case employment doesn't come straight away. This would total around $160 for the four months.

So I am asking for $900, which I know is a lot. But this would clear his debts and make it so that he would be able to see the vet going forward.  It would also be cheaper than the surgical option, which is estimated as $1500 or more.

I hate to ask, but Hermen is my cuddle bug. He is always there for me when I am sick. He lays on the bed next to me during my bad times and he has the best and loudest purr that I have ever heard. He is a soul soother and just an all around good cat. Will you please help us help him? Even a little bit helps.

If we get a little extra beyond the $900 we are asking for, we will put it in a fund toward his future medical bills - which we know will come since he will have to have periodic x-rays and be on a long term prescription diet.

Thank you for reading our story and for considering our  request to help Hermen with his medical care. My family is eternal grateful for any help.
