Scooby is a 10.5 year Sun Conure (Aratinga solstitialis)
On Wednesday, June 24, 2015 she unexpectedly vomited white fluid and stayed puffed and very lethargic. She was immediately rushed to her Avian Vet and had numerous tests done including blood work, fecal and a crop wash. She returned later that evening and seemed to be okay on her new regime of antibiotics until the afternoon of June 25th. She unexpectedly seizured and fell to the cage floor with a hard thud.
Again she was immediately rushed to her Avian Vet where she was put on oxygen and monitored. Many more tests later including physical exams, X-rays, and a 24 hour stay in the hospital with the oxygen.
Today, June 26th, she again had more tests which includes blood work to test for Avian Borna Virus / PDD and a barium test which also needs more X-rays. She is now on 3 different medications, 2 of which are antibiotics and is an anti inflammatory and is stable. All signs, X-rays and symptoms are pointing to her having PDD which is caused by the Avian Borna Virus. She could have been a carrier for this all along and it only now just cropped up, or she could have been exposed somewhere, we will never know. She is currently allowed to come home but has to be on strict observation and her meds she hates are twice daily indefinitely.
We are still awaiting some test results to confirm the ABV/PDD, but she will now have to be tested regularly to monitor this disease as well as her kidneys that will be affected by the medications. Everything I can cross is crossed for the best possible outcome for my amazing best feathered friend.
In closing, this has been an emotionally trying time that not only has taken a severe toll on Scooby herself, but also myself physically, mentally and financially. I've reached the limit on my Care Credit card that is specifically reserved for Scooby's well being, and she is by far nowhere near out of the woods yet. ALL donations go directly to her bills and ANY donation big or small is welcomed and very much appreciated.
