DANIEL HAMEL VOCATION FUND

Daniel Hamel is a quiet, humble young man who currently works for the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation as a Park Ranger. He was baptized as a child and received First Holy Communion in the Catholic Church, but was never Confirmed as a teenager. In his mid-twenties, Dan felt the call to be Confirmed and participated in the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) program at All Saints Parish in Haverhill, MA. At the age of 27, Dan was Confirmed during the Easter season in 2013 along with dozens of other adults from the Merrimack Valley area of Massachusetts.
With his quiet, reserved nature, Dan never revealed outwardly the way God was working in his life as he went through his Adult Confirmation (RCIA) process. However, once he was “sealed with the Gift of the Holy Spirit” at his Confirmation and completed his Sacraments of Initiation, the Holy Spirit poured into his life in a very profound way and Dan felt a strong call to religious life. He joined the Knights of Columbus, Council 202 in Haverhill and began helping out with the RCIA program at All Saints Parish shortly after his Confirmation. During this time he also began looking for a religious community that he could join. After searching and exploring different religious orders, Dan was drawn to Franciscan spirituality and eventually applied for Candidacy with the Order of Capuchin Friars Minor.
Dan’s Candidacy period with the Capuchins only strengthened his call to religious life and also a call to the Priesthood. This year, Dan received great news when he found out that the Capuchins had accepted him into their Postulancy Program. However, before Dan can start the program, he has a couple of challenges he must face and overcome. First off, Dan found out just before his acceptance that he has Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. He just started chemotherapy treatments and his prognosis is good. He was very pleased that the Capuchins still accepted his application even knowing of his condition. Secondly, Dan has approximately $30,000 in remaining student loan debt that he must clean up before he can be a Postulant with the Capuchins.
Dan’s brother Knights in Council 202 have pledged to help him financially so he can pursue his religious vocation as soon as possible. If support comes from just Council members, it will take a little bit of time to get Dan into formation. His treatments will affect his ability to work extra hours in order to pay off his remaining debt for a while. Dan has a couple of crosses to bear right now and Council 202 has started the (Daniel Hamel Vocation?) Fund in order to help our brother get to where God is calling him a little faster than he would be able to by himself. We know that the suffering Dan will go through over the next few months will be redemptive and prepare him for the work God has in store for him, but even Jesus had Simon of Cyrene to help him carry His Cross for a distance. Council 202 is looking for a few Simon’s to help our Brother Dan carry his cross for a while.
Thank you for your consideration of this worthy cause and God Bless you!
Sincerely,
The Brother Knights of KOC Council 202, Haverhill, MA
