Silk Screening for East LA School

YouthBuild Boyle Heights is an alternative high school that works with youth between the ages of 16-24. We offer a second chance for a high school diploma to youth who have been kicked out, pushed out or aged out of traditional high schools. Our school is project based, which means that instead of using standardized tests, we create authentic projects that prepare our students to solve real life problems in our community.
We are fundraising to create a silk screening studio at our school. As part of class project, our students recently visited a local print shop to print t-shirts for the school. This experience inspired our students to create their own silk screening studio. Our hope is that this studio will serve serveral purposes.
1) We hope to use our studio to provide jobs for our students. The average household income here in Boyle Heights is $34,263 per year, compared to $56,074 for the state of California. The poverty that our students experience often prevents them from succeeding in school. In addition, many of our students are parents or are responsible for supporting other members of their family. We hope that the studio will offer an opportunity for our students to earn an honest living, supporting themselves and their families.
2) We hope to use our studio to complete class projects. Instead of taking multiple choice tests, our students create projects to demonstrate their understanding of math, science, history and English. We try to ensure that these projects have an authentic and real-life application. The studio will allow our students to create artistic posters to share their new knowledge with the community.
3) We hope to use our studio to serve the community. Our school often participates in efforts and campaigns to improve our community. Some of these campaigns include creating community gardens, promoting health and nutrition, organizing for tenants rights, organizing for the rights of street vendors and organizing for civil and human rights with LA jails. We hope to use our studio to make posters and t-shirts that advance these causes.
