Until recently, Riley was enjoying the life of an everyday 8 year old. Going to school, swimming lessons, playing football and hockey. He was happy just being an athletic, healthy boy, oblivious to the struggle that he was about to endure.
What started out as an occasional headache turned into an everyday occurrence of dizziness, headaches and vomiting. In a matter of a week we went from thinking it was a really bad cold or flu to being fast tracked between doctors and specialists to see what was really going on. On December 18th, an MRI showed a large brain tumour close to Riley's brain stem. We were devastated as we planned for the inevitable surgery during the Christmas holidays. We were admitted that night to the Stollery Children's hospital to undergo observation and prepare for the surgery to remove the tumour. All Riley understood was that he wasn't going to have headaches anymore.
Riley underwent an 8 hour successful surgery on December 22. The recovery was long and emotional. Riley could not understand why he wasn't able to leave and go home for Christmas. We felt helpless that we couldn't fulfill his wish but we were happy that the surgery was a success.
On the day we looked forward to bringing Riley home, we received shattering news. His tumour was a Grade IV Medulloblastoma. This aggressive tumour tends to spread to other parts of the brain, spinal cord or bone marrow if not treated immediately and aggressively.
The doctors will be sending Riley and one parent to Florida from Edmonton, Alberta to seek treatment not yet available in Canada. While Alberta Health Care will cover the treatment and flights for 2, the day to day expenses and accommodations for the 8 weeks we are there will not be.
We are looking for your help to keep our family together during this difficult time. The expenses we must incur will be very hard on our family financially. We are very appreciative of any support you can give us to alleviate this financial burden while our family supports Riley's fight.
