The Za’atar Shelter in Athens

Do you want to support volunteers who have been helping refugees in Athens, Greece for many months in their effort to provide a safe and secure place for unaccompanied minors and other vulnerable refugees?

You can now do so. The founder of the Immigrant and Refugee Support Group in Athens, has managed to secure a facility where integration and preparing for the future are the key words. The shelter is in the heart of Athens and is a spacious house arranged on three floors. It is a great environment with a magical name: Za’atar.

Za’atar is the popular Middle Eastern mixture of herbs and spices typically containing thyme and marjoram or oregano along with sesame seeds and salt. This uniquely blended spice, enjoyed by many, has inspired us to give its name to the core group of volunteers who are working tirelessly on this project. Their efforts have now come to fruition by setting up the shelter described above. It provides a safe and secure environment for vulnerable families and unaccompanied minors.

Za’atar started out as an association but it will soon be registered as a “social enterprise” enabling us to provide salaried jobs to some of the refugees. The gofundme page itself has been created by the American co-partners of Za’atar that are involved in this venture. The project is managed by Marina, who is both Director and founder of Za’atar. She and her team mates believe that decent facilities for all refugees are a must. It is also paramount to provide a safe space for refugees to rest, learn, and grow in order not just to survive but to regain control over their lives.

We hope that your donations will help us make this shelter sustainable with others to follow. Educational activities for unaccompanied minors and members of vulnerable families include teaching English (and other languages, e.g. German) and arts as well as providing training in skills that will help refugees to ease into their new lives. This involves promoting their integration into Greece and Europe, as a whole. We will do our best to fight discrimination and reduce any racial and religious tension.

We need your support to make the project sustainable. We have only just started and our resources are limited. There are a lot of things we still need for the shelter and we hope to purchase those as your contributions come in. Many people have helped already, because they, just like us, believe that “It takes a whole village to raise a child”.

The children at the shelter will have an even bigger community to raise them: a world that is becoming less concerned about personal material wealth and people who are committed to give a future to each and every child while focussing on those who are in desperate need right now to find their bearings in an environment that is both safe and loving.

Support Marina, Aida,  and Marina's team’s work if you can.

We will regularly keep you updated on our achievements and introduce to you the silent heroes of this project.

Thank you for your contribution!
