Eind oktober vertrekken wij (Cato, Corine, Johanna en Sten) voor 2 maanden naar Zimbabwe voor onze minor Global Health. Tijdens deze periode gaan we onderzoek doen naar de toegang tot gezondheidszorg voor zwangere adolescenten in die regio.

Maar we komen niet alleen om te leren en te onderzoeken. We willen ook graag iets betekenen voor de mensen daar.

De afgelopen twee jaar heeft de community rondom Chikuku Hospital keihard gewerkt aan iets bijzonders: een bijgebouw bij het ziekenhuis, speciaal voor adolescenten. Een plek waar zij op een veilige en laagdrempelige manier terecht kunnen voor zorg. Elke steen is door de mensen van de community zelf gemaakt.

Het gebouw is inmiddels klaar. Het is klein, maar wat is de community trots dat het eindelijk af is!

Toch laat de officiële opening nog even op zich wachten. Er is nog geld nodig voor de inrichting en de benodigde materialen. Tot nu toe is daar helaas nog geen financiële bron voor gevonden.

Toen wij in een gesprek aangaven dat we hier misschien iets in zouden kunnen betekenen door in Nederland geld in te zamelen, vertelde de projectmanager dat dit echt als een wonderlijke uitkomst voor haar voelt.

Dat raakte ons. En daarom willen wij graag samen met jullie helpen.

Met uw bijdrage kunnen er bijvoorbeeld medische hulpmiddelen zoals stethoscopen, specula, babyweegschalen of bloeddrukmeters aangeschaft worden. Maar er is ook geld nodig voor praktische voorzieningen zoals stoelen, privacy-schermen, een bureau, een onderzoeksbank en digitale hulpmiddelen.

Zo kan dit lege gebouw een plek worden waar jonge zwangere vrouwen zich veilig en welkom voelen en waar ze de zorg kunnen krijgen die zij en hun ongeboren kindje nodig hebben.

Wat voor ons misschien zo vanzelfsprekend lijkt, is het daar lang niet altijd.

Wij willen daarom niet alleen naar Zimbabwe gaan om te leren, te ervaren en ons onderzoek te doen. We willen ook graag iets bijdragen aan de community.

Dear all,

At the end of October, the four of us (Cato, Corine, Johanna and Sten) will travel to Zimbabwe for two months as part of our Global Health minor. During this time, we will do some research on access to healthcare for pregnant adolescents in the region.

But when we leave, we would also love to bring something with us for the people there. ❤️

Over the past two years, the community surrounding Chikuku Hospital has worked incredibly hard on something special: a small building next to the hospital, specifically for adolescents. A place where they can access healthcare in a safe and welcoming environment. Every brick was made by members of the community themselves.

The building is now complete. It may be small, but the community is incredibly proud that it has finally been finished!

However, the official opening is still waiting to take place. Funding is still needed for the furniture, equipment and other essential supplies. Unfortunately, no financial source has yet been found to cover these costs.

When we mentioned that we might be able to help by raising money in the Netherlands, the project manager told us that this felt like a truly wonderful opportunity to her.

That really touched us. And that is why we would love to help. Together with you.

With your contribution, medical equipment such as stethoscopes, speculums, baby scales and blood pressure monitors can be purchased. Funding is also needed for practical items such as chairs, privacy screens, a desk, an examination couch and digital equipment.

This will help turn an empty building into a welcoming and safe place where young pregnant women can receive the care and support they and their unborn babies need.

That is why we do not want to travel to Zimbabwe only to learn, experience and conduct our research. We would also love to give something back to the community.
