Crestone Energy Fair 2021
The Crestone Energy Fair is more than just an event, it represents the values of our community and how we choose to live in greater harmony with each other and the planet. It is a celebration of the sustainable solutions we have created and an honoring of the unique web we have woven together.
Since 1990, this annual event has been hosted in the San Luis Valley as a tribute to our commitment to innovative ideas in construction, lifestyle, and agriculture in the region. Remaining one of the longest running sustainability fairs in the nation, we are dedicated to creating an experience that empowers attendees with access to the resources and skills needed to implement alternative building and energy technologies in their lives.
This year we will once again produce a hybrid event after last years success. We will also expand the number of stages so that we can provide a broader base of educational topics. We are excited to share presentations that highlight this year’s theme: “Reconnect: Self, Village, Nature.”
The vision of the Crestone Energy Fair is to be a leading model and global leader of sustainable living practices by hosting hands-on workshops, seminars, symposiums a n d o n l i n e e d u c a t i o n a l m a t e r i a l s . Throughout the year we collaborate with local groups to support sustainable economic development, to utilize our natural resources more consciously and to foster an atmosphere of collaboration within the community. We bridge the vision and wisdom of our ancestors and elders with the innovation and creativity of youth to create
solutions for a more regenerative future.
Crestone has a rich history of homeowners building with alternative construction and energy methods, which provides us with one of the highest concentrations of these models in the country. Building styles such as straw bale, cordwood, hempcrete and earthships, as well as electricity generation from solar photo-voltaic systems, wind, human methane, and geothermal, can all be experienced through first hand demonstrations and Home Tours. We believe that power generation and learning to live “off the grid” are fundamental to living a sustainable lifestyle.
Last year, because of the pandemic, we found ourselves needing to adapt to the conditions in a couple of ways. First, because of the then-current restrictions within the town limits, we decided to proceed with a new off grid location. A local land owner donated 10 acres to create a permanent home for the event. We excavated an amphitheater, built a stage, A/V booth and community kitchen to accommodate our growing annual audience in an effort to create a permanent home for the event.
Once again this year, whether people choose to attend in person, remain socially distant or are maintaining a level of quarantine, we’ll be providing the complete content both live and in a virtual forum. This was new territory for the event last year, but was a resounding success. In addition to the 500 live attendees, we reached over 3000 more people through our live stream viewership, with thousands more watching the individual discussions.
The financial support we receive from visionary individuals and businesses is what allows us to continue to provide this weekend of free education to anyone interested in a regenerative future. We believe that the sharing of information and resources will undoubtedly reap an abundant reward. Crestone is proactively asking, answering and, most importantly, acting on the next series of big questions that stimulate our cultures evolution towards a prosperous future.
