WHAT A TRIP: Rick Doblin's Journey to Legalize Psychedelics

Hi! Welcome to our GoFundMe for "WHAT A TRIP" - a film about Rick Doblin's Unlikely 50 Year Journey to Legalize Psychedelics, a documentary we have been filming for over 9-years (with unprecedented access) following the colorful life of Dr. Rick Doblin and the team at MAPS on a multi-decade journey to legalize MDMA and psychedelics for therapeutic use, pioneering psychedelic research along the way. Our film will be released after MDMA is rescheduled and will tell the true story of how this unlikely team achieved what many thought to be impossible.

My name is Nirvan Mullick, I'm the director of this film. My sister Dream Mullick (Producer) and I have been working this film since 2014, capturing important moments along the way. We are excited to finally share a glimpse of our film with this trailer, and looking to raise funds to help finish this film and bring this story to the world.

WHEN WILL THIS FILM BE RELEASED?

Our film will be released after MDMA is rescheduled by the FDA to become a prescription drug (estimated to happen sometime in 2024), and will tell the incredible true story of how that happened.

HOW WILL FUNDS BE USED?

We are fundraising to allow us to continue to follow Rick and MAPS (The Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies) with filming over the next year and to help raise funds to start post-production. Below are some fundraising goals and more info on how your support will help us to tell the story of Rick and MAPS.

$25,000 FUNDRAISING GOAL

Raising $25,000 will help us start our edit while we continue to film more interviews and scenes with Rick and the MAPS team as they navigate the complex challenges of commercializing MDMA-assisted therapy.

STRETCH GOALS:

$50,000: HELPS US GO FURTHER!

Helps with ongoing production, and will let us travel with Rick and MAPS to capture more of the work they are doing to expand psychedelic therapy around the world. This will also give us some resources to continue to build an audience before the film is done (so we can explore a variety of alternative distribution models).

$100,000 - $250,000: 1 YEAR OF FILMING!

This will allow us to continue filming over the next year and cover the story more completely!

$500,000: FILMING + EDITING AND KEY POST-PRODUCTION

This will allow us to begin editing and post-production simultaneously while we continue to film. We will be able to continue with production and hire a full-time editor for the 12 - 16 months we estimate it will take to edit this movie.

$750,000: ANIMATION AND RECREATIONS

We will have a budget to add some animation and effects to bring some formative moments from Rick’s past to life. Our director studied Experimental Animation at CalArts and we have some really fun visual ideas to bring Rick’s formative dreams and moments from childhood to life.

$1,000,000: SOUND DESIGN AND POST-PRODUCTION

We will have resources for our soundtrack, archival research and licensing fees

$1,300,000 PRESCRIPTION X: THE RICK DOBLIN STORY

Helps us with post-production, sound mix, color timing, additional pick-up shots, and legal fees to finish this film!

$1,500,000 MARKETING AND FESTIVALS OR SELF-DISTRIBUTION

If we get this level of support, we will have the resources to market and either do a festival run or possibly self-distribute our film. We are looking at various alternative distribution models, including the Gabor Mate's Trauma Movie and Fantastic Fungi.

$2,000,000 ADDITIONAL EDUCATIONAL MATERIAL

We will have resources to create additional educational material from our footage and to make additional content to support the film and the broader psychedelic movement.
