First floor move for disabled wife!

Help us move into a ground floor apartment!

My wife is disabled. She was diagnosed at 10 years old with Dermatomyositis, as well as Psoriatic Arthritis and Erythrodermic Psoriasis. It is a degenerative autoimmune disease in the same family as lupus. It attacks the musculoskeletal system, affecting the skin and muscles, as well as joints. Twenty years of high dose steroids have given Laura her girlish figure, making it difficult to stay active, and on bad days, do simple tasks such as walking to the restroom and brushing her hair.

Over the last year she’s lost approximately 200 lbs, mostly on her own, with the last 60 lbs spurred on by her recent bariatric surgery.

We’ve been living in a second story, four-bedroom apartment since march 2015 under the understanding that when a first floor apartment became available, we’d be able to move. Our roommate moved out unexpectedly a few months ago, leaving us to make up the difference in rent and utilities, and with that along with unforeseen events (a car accident that needs repair, unexpected bills and expenses, etc) we’ve fallen behind and we’ve been playing catch up since.

A two-bedroom on the first floor has recently come available, and we put in our notice and holding fee! The new apartment offers much closer parking, meaning a shorter walk to the apartment. It is closer to the pool, the park and picnic areas outside, as well as a closer walk to school for our eleven-year-old daughter.

The move in date is June 20th. However, this move now requires a new deposit along with the last month’s rent, prorated rent for the new apartment, as well as normal rent being due on the 1st of the month for our current apartment totaling approximately 3000 dollars between the 1st of the month and our move in date (not including playing catch up on utilities, fixing the car etc.)

Therefore, we’re running this campaign in the hopes of raising the money to help with these expenses. Laura and I aren’t the type of people that accept support from others well. We believe in karma, and in paying it forward, but we’re going to do our best to ask for help when we’re genuinely in need. We don’t need a hand out, just a hand up. Thank you so much for offering that hand.

Additionally, or daughter's biological father has filed for custody of our daughter; the legal fees are piling up. Laura has been the primary custodial parent for the last ten years, all while battling her illness. However, or daughter's biological father is now claiming that Laura is an unfit parent because she is disabled. Moving to a ground floor unit could take any small amount of validity out of his claim, because it would assure that our daughter could always get to her mom and vice versa. This kind if discrimination against disabled parents is ableist and we are using every spare bit if money and energy to fight it.
