Bowie Party For UK Sepsis Trust

In November 2016, my Mum was feeling a bit run down, and had all the classic flu like symptoms. She progressively felt worse over the next few days, but thought nothing else of it. One of the days, my mum stayed in bed all day, which was very out of character for her, and so my sister went to check on her. Her neck and chest had swelled so much that she was unrecognizable. We had a doctor come out who then told us to take her to A&E. We went to the Princess of Wales Hospital first, then was rushed in an ambulance to Morriston Hospital. They quickly drained the neck and chest, and we were expecting my mum home in the next two days. There was a complication. The next thing we knew, she had been put in an induced coma and on a ventilator. Her tongue and airways were swollen and she couldn't breathe. We later found out that she had contracted sepsis, and it was touch and go whether she would pull through or not. It was a very harrowing time for us all. We hadn't heard of sepsis before this, and were terrified. Whilst my mum was in the coma, the nurses encouraged us to play music to her and talk to her. We constantly played Bowie to her (she's a massive fan!) On one particular day, the doctors reduced the sedation whilst we were playing music, and as soon as 'Starman' came on, she was crying and started moving her arms. I jokingly said that we would put some Kylie Minogue on for her (not a massive fan at all) and her arm flung up towards me...we knew she was going to be okay from then on! After a few more days, she finally came out of the coma, the doctors were astounded as they didn't think she would pull through. The ordeal wasn't over yet though. She was in hospital for over a month, suffering from internal bleeding, had two blood transfusions, fevers, being unable to walk and loss of memory, she could barely talk for about a month, had nerve damage and hair loss. We got her home just in time for Christmas, although it was very emotional, we made it the best one yet and now appreciate every moment together. There are still a few on going issues, but there is a light at the end of the tunnel! And so, as my mum is getting stronger mentally and physically, she wants to give something back. She wants to raise awareness of sepsis, and raise money for the UK Sepsis Trust and also for the ICU at Morriston Hospital. We are holding a fundraising party in August 2018, the theme will be Bowie and Glam Rock! We are hiring an AMAZING Bowie tribute band for the event. We've seen them twice before, and they are outstanding! We would appreciate any help you could give us during our fundraising! Let's raise awareness of this horrible disease! All proceeds will be going towards the UK Sepsis Trust, ICU Morriston Hospital, and some towards the fundraiser party! Come on you pretty things, we can be heroes, just for one day!
