Hello, my name is Anghea Dolisca. I am a 9th grade student in Engineering and Technology magnet program, at Royal Palm Beach High School. Over the past two summers I have attended the Science,
Technology, Engineering, and Math Prep program, commonly referred to as the STEM Prep program, at Southern Methodist University (“SMU”) in Dallas, Texas. The STEM Prep program is designed to help students like myself who are interested in the
science, technology, engineering, and math, prepare for college and beyond. The past two summers I received financial aid in the form of a scholarship to help with
the cost of attending the program. Unfortunately, due to budget cuts in the STEM Prep program, scholarships will not be available to STEM Prep attendees this year.
THE NEED:
In order to attend STEM Prep this summer I will need to raise $5,500.00 to cover the program cost. I would greatly appreciate anything you, your family, and friends can contribute to helping me reach this goal.
MY EXPERIENCE:
I first attended STEM Prep in the 7th grade. The program was held at Southern Methodist University. I lived on the SMU campus for six weeks and took college-level course, such as, biology, chemistry, statistics, research writing, and laboratory
techniques. Everyday classes began at 8:30 in the morning and my day would end at 8:30 in the evening after study hall. We took exams in each class every week and were expected to be able to present on a particular disease we chose at the end of the summer. At the end of the program I created an in-depth research presentation on a listeria.
WHAT YOUR FUNDS GO TOWARDS:
The money that I am raising goes to pay for the cost of attending the STEM Prep program: Activities, Materials, Lodging, and Food. This year the program will take place at University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. Attendees will be there for eight
weeks the program will run from June 17, 2017 through August 12, 2017. We will be working in basic science laboratories in an academic/university setting under the direct supervision of an assigned mentor/research scientist.
WHY I AM ASKING FOR YOUR HELP:
It would mean so much to me, to be able to raise the funds to attend STEM Prep this summer. This program has helped me learn how to prepare for college. STEM Prep has shown me how important it is for me to have positive peer support and has also helped me continue my academic development. The program has become a very important part in my learning and I hope I can count on your support.
STEM PREP PROJECT SUCCESS RATES:
• 100% of our trainees attend college
• 100% graduate from college
• Greater than 80% of our college seniors matriculate into graduate or medical school
