On Tuesday 17th January 2017 our beautiful mum fell and hit her head, causing a small cut just above her eye.
After a couple of hospital trips we received a phone call on Friday 20th January 2017 informing us that mum had contracted Necrotising fasciitis, a very rare flesh eating disease. We were told to come straight to the hospital and that they would be taking mum into emergency theatre to remove the dead skin and tissue from her face, we were told she would loose her eyelids.
After a 5 hour operation mum was then taken to the intensive care unit and was on a life support machine due to been seriously ill. Her kidneys had started to shut down and the doctors explained that mum was critically ill and may not make it through the night.
Over the next few days we were informed that mum had also contracted Strep A and Sepsis. They sent mum for a number of scans to check that nothing had spread to her heart and the results came back as all clear! She was on an unbelievable amount of medication including 3 lots of antibiotics. Another few days went by and mum started responding to all the medication and the infection was under control.
The surgeons said they couldn't believe how well she was doing, they confirmed the infection had gone and even started talking about facial reconstruction! Mum kept getting stronger and on Friday 27th January 2017 mum was taken back into theatre to start the Job of reconstructing her face.
The doctors explained that they would be taking muscle, skin and tissue and blood vessels from mums leg and using this to rebuild her face as well as a skin graft from her other leg to reconstruct her eyelids. Mum was in surgery for 11 hours and everything went well. The doctors kept mum on courses of antibiotics for another week just to be on the safe side. They slowly started to drop mums medication down and she was put onto an oral and Maxillofacial ward to recover. The doctors and nurses couldn't believe how well mum was doing and asked if they would be able to use her story, and take pictures for research and training purposes.
Necrotising Fasciitis affects 1 in 455,000 people and if this is not caught in enough time it can be fatal. We can't thank the surgeons and doctors enough at the LGI and know that we will never be able to repay them for what they have done for mum. She has a long road ahead with various operations to come but we are there every step of the way with her! Our hero!

Footprints in the Sand
One night I dreamed a dream.
As I was walking along the beach with my Lord.
Across the dark sky flashed scenes from my life.
For each scene, I noticed two sets of footprints in the sand,
One belonging to me and one to my Lord.
After the last scene of my life flashed before me,
I looked back at the footprints in the sand.
I noticed that at many times along the path of my life,
especially at the very lowest and saddest times,
there was only one set of footprints.
This really troubled me, so I asked the Lord about it.
"Lord, you said once I decided to follow you,
You'd walk with me all the way.
But I noticed that during the saddest and most troublesome times of my life,
there was only one set of footprints.
I don't understand why, when I needed You the most, You would leave me."
He whispered, "My precious child, I love you and will never leave you
Never, ever, during your trials and testings.
When you saw only one set of footprints,
It was then that I carried you."
