Al Martinez Helping Hand

Donation protected
Al Martinez, beloved artist in Grass Valley, California, injured his left hand a week before Thanksgiving. Injured is a small word. While constructing a mobility ramp for another dear artist in our community, the table saw took control and swiftly Al's world shifted.

Due to Al's calmness and having a studio mate on hand, he made it to the hospital in record time and was quickly transported by helicopter to San Francisco. Two fingers were severed from his left hand, and one was able to be saved and reattached. Al cannot move this hand for a month and then assessment will be made from there for how to approach full rehabilitation.

Any of you who know Al know that this is only a small challenge in some ways due to his spirit. He is right  handed and is already sketching a bit and thinking about watercolors. He is a maker and will continue to be, adapting to what his body needs.

The challenge comes with income. Al is known for his forging work, one of a kind books, time portals and intricate jewelry pieces. He creates large visionary art pieces for window displays at Cult of Gemini, a store in Grass Valley. He also works a night job. All of these specific situations are on hold for an unknown amount of time.

We are holding this fundraiser to raise a year's worth of rent so Al doesn't lose his live-in studio, and so we can eliminate worry so he can direct his energy to healing and a full recovery.

There are many ways to support. Donations here will go directly to Al for living expenses. Cash donations are also being collected at Cult of Gemini. Al's current inventory of art work is for sale at both Cult of Gemini in Grass Valley and at Osborn Woods Gallery in Nevada City; all money from these sales go directly to Al.

Al is leaving the hospital today (Tuesday, November 27) and will be living with his daughter, Marci, and her family for a month to be in a warm housing situation. Food & meal coordination are underway with other community members as well as time coordination for when Marci's at work due to the delicacy of Al's hand.

All support is welcome. No donation is too small. Let's rally around Al not just because this is a time of need for him, but because we love him. Let's show Al how much we love all the visionary dreams he adds to our world.
