Bone Marrow Transplant-Nicholas V.

Donation protected
When my son Nicholas Valencia was born, he was diagnosed with Severe Combined Immunodeficiency (SCID). SCID is often called “bubble boy disease”. This disease causes the child to have very little or no immune system: In Nicholas’ case, he does not have T- or B- cells present to help fight off infections. Because children with SCID experience multiple infections, they fail to grow and gain weight as expected.

At 2-months old he underwent his first Haploidentical Stem Cell Transplant at the UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital in San Francisco. I was his donor for this procedure. Our family spent a year and a half living away from our home in San Felipe Pueblo, NM.

Nicholas is now 16 years old and in 11th grade; although we have had some hard times to fight through, he continues to follow his hopes and dreams. Nicholas is attending school at the Santa Fe Indian School, however he has been out of the classroom for about 2 weeks now, because he has pneumonia. The school has been very understanding and helpful during this time; they have loaned Nicholas a Chromebook so he is able to complete his school work during our time out in California.

With the upcoming treatment, our family of three will be returning to the UCSF for Nicholas to receive a boost hematopoietic cell transplant, in which I am his donor. Since I will be undergoing my own evaluation and preparation to be his donor again, we ask that you consider providing financial assistance to my 19-year-old son Xavier Valencia who will provide caregiving to both myself and Nicholas during the time of this treatment. We are required to stay in California for at least 3 months to ensure that the procedure is successful.

This treatment is scheduled for the beginning of October 2018. We will be traveling from San Felipe Pueblo to California within the next 2-weeks. During our time in California, our family will continue to fundraise on our behalf in New Mexico.

We kindly ask for your help in reaching our goal of $16,000. Through community fundraising events, we have raised about $4,000 to date. These funds will help pay for transportation, lodging and meals for myself, Nicholas and his brother Xavier to be housed in California.
